The most recent show I have watched is Netflix’s “Stranger Things”, which tells the story of four young middle schoolers living in a town ravished by the supernatural. This series has received critical acclaim, with main actress Millie Bobby Brown, who plays the mysterious foreigner “Eleven”, nominated for an Emmy.
“Stranger Things” takes place during the 1980s in a small town in Indiana, situated near the US Department of Energy. Experimental mishaps lead to the escaping of a horrifying monster that abducts humans and a young girl named “Eleven” who is able to control her surroundings with her mind. A nerdy friend group of four boys is impacted by these superhuman creatures and uses their interest in science and the make-believe to go after the monsters on their own. The boys’ endeavors lead them to befriend “Eleven” and slowly uncover her true powers and harrowing backstory.
This show is unlike any that I have previously watched. Composed of only eight episodes, with the second season yet to come out, “Stranger Things” left me utterly confused until about the fifth episode. At first, the story line is presented in such ambiguous manner that the viewer is unable to piece together any aspects of the plot. My one criticism of the show is that its first half was so unclear that it was difficult for one to stay engaged. If the uncertainty was cut back to only two or three episodes, audiences would have been “hooked” way earlier.
Moreover, I found myself wondering throughout the show why the creators chose to set the series during the 1980s. This too was not obvious until the plot unraveled more. Much of the show deals with missing persons and conflicts that would be easily resolved with cell phones and modern technology. Had it been set in the 21st century, much of the mystery would have been erased. In the end, I found this unique setting to bolster the likeability of the series after watching the first season, given its interesting juxtaposition of eighties charm with abnormal terror.
I started to watch the first episode the other day and I was so confused halfway through it that I ended up turning it off and finding something else. It didn’t seem like that interesting of a show, but I should’ve definitely given it more than half an episode to hook me. I know people are starting to talk about how good it is, so like you said after the fourth or fifth episode it must get better.
Without a doubt, the Burger King Menu has stood out for the number of times a brand has been featured in the most recent season. Amidst background glimpses and full interaction with the characters, viewers of the show were left looking forward to Whoppers and fries.
