Lucky me! Remember that question I hoped I would see on my exam? It was there and I absolutely nailed it. Unfortunately, the rest of the exam didn’t go that well (would you be able to describe, for me, the terms under which China entered the World Trade Organization. No? Me neither.), but I’m very very happy my exams are now complete.

I’ve written a few times about my classes and their structures. Overall, my academic expectations were not met here at UCT. Two of my classes in particular were mismanaged, disorganized, and frustration to learn in. There’s no point in whining about it, but it made the academic experience more stressful that I wanted. I am very happy with my Urban Geography course and my Public Sector Ecos class.

These classes were well managed, interconnected, and had engaging lecturers. My interest in sustainable housing was piqued over and over again in the urban geography class. Last semester for our policy paper, we made recommendation for State College to improve the affordability of housing, so this was an awesome continuation of this study. Even more crazy — I cited a guest lecturer from the urban geography course IN that policy paper. Tom Slater was even more engaging in person.

I nearly gave up hope for my Public Sector course. The first 5 weeks or so of the course were a slough. The lecturers were dry, and didn’t pretend to spice up the theory we had to learn. However, once the course convener started teaching her section, the class totally changed. When she started on her first day there were 8 students in lecture..out of 150. She stayed committed to teaching the class in engaging way, and it really worked. Word spread, and on the last week of lectures, there were at least 50 students in class. Dr. Scheba, I hope you’re proud of your teaching, you should be.

My time is winding down quickly. I leave this Saturday! Although my academic experience was just at par, everything else was a hole-in-one. I’m going to spend my waning minutes here as I spent the rest: in awe.

Home very soon!
