To all my fellow introspective friends:

I’ve recently discovered that I find solace and peace of mind in reflecting through poetry. Sometimes, life gives you a moment so beautiful and meaningful that writing pages about the event doesn’t do it justice. There is just too much to explain: where you were, who was involved, the dialogue, and what actually happened to make the moment so magical. Instead of forcing myself to write out all the little details, I’ve been working on capturing the aura of special times through writing lines. Not all of the details will be there, but poems work wonders at preserving how you felt in the moment. As a STEM major, I don’t have a formal outlet to exercise my creative writing skills day to day. Composing poems rather than journaling has been a fantastic new way for me to put my thoughts and feelings into concise memos that I can return to as a reminder of the past.

I’ll share two reflective poems with this blog post. The first is from a day of skiing that was spent with one of my best friends and adventure partners.

A Ski Lift Ride

1/4/14

The sun

Strikes the perfect brightness in this moment

It blends with the lamp posts

That line the ski slopes

Im having trouble telling which is which

Im a quiet single this time

Sitting back to keep myself warm and

Thinking about the glory of the day

Of chocolate waffles and a girl named Selina

Good snow

Better company

Constantly warm

That leads to my happiness in this moment

I wish the family I ride up with well

As if we’ve chatted the whole time

Just about to enjoy the solitude of my last run

Rightfully titled independence

There’s an unanswered text message from you

I don’t worry about it much

All there is to focus on

Is the setting sun, soon to be gone

Taking all of the warmth of the day with it

Below is a second poem that I wrote to commemorate the nice moment I am experiencing right now as I write this blog post.

The Beauty of State College

10/19/16

A Yogi

A Slackliner

A Man in a morph suit who juggles.

And me.

College student in a hammock

It’s “the week” of the fall

Prime foliage, weather, and colors all around

We’re not the only ones out enjoying it all

Middle school students, spectating the football game, run amuck

They take interest in our setup

“Cool hammock” they exclaim!

“Can I try to balance on this rope?” One asks.

“Can you teach me how to juggle?”

They are more gracious than me

And let the kids in

To discover

It’s about exploration

It’s about after-school fun

It’s about being outside.

Fall in State College.

I’m blessed to be apart of it all.
