Week 8

Week 8

This week we will follow the continuing student journey. At-risk and DUS Conditional (DUSC) students are discussed as well as common questions and issues, academic reviews and graduating students.

Students work through academic programs at very different rates. Some adopt a slow and steady approach while other students immerse themselves in schooling to reach their goals.

It is not uncommon for students to experience difficulties managing academics and to encounter life issues that affect academic progress. The research indicates that students studying online may experience feelings of isolation and tend not to develop a strong sense of connection to the institution. Keeping students motivated and focused on completing their programs can be challenging. Be aware of the resources for World Campus students. Strategies to Improve Online Learning is an important resource for students who may be struggling academically or just need help becoming engaged in the online environment.

During week 8, you will continue to respond to wdadvising email messages and begin phone duty.  Just as the WDadvising email account was, phone duty is also an excellent training tool. You will respond to all kinds of inquiries such as re-enrollments, academic renewals, and many others, just like you did on the WDadvising email account. Your mentors will continue to reinforce the learning by answering any questions you may have about an incoming call. We all remember what it is like to be on your first phone shift, so do not hesitate to get help. Continue to use the resources provided in the online training program and seek out your fellow teammates for guidance. Use Yammer and our Pidgin IM system to communicate whenever that is easier for you. Don’t be afraid to put callers on hold or take a name and number so that you can ask questions and get the information that you need! Good luck with your first phone shift!

You will also meet with staff from Learning Design.  Also, a member of the Leadership Team will review the process of Academic Reviews, which we do every semester to check students’ grades and ensure that their upcoming course schedules are appropriate.

You will complete the following online unit of training: Mapping the Continuing Student Journey.

Week 8: Phone Duty: You probably have discovered that phone duty requires the ability to think quickly and find information swiftly. Is phone duty more challenging than wdadvising?  If so, how?

Mapping the Continuing Student Journey:  You have read this lesson this week, and will be assigned a roster of students next week.  As you look forward to next week, what are some of the student challenges that you expect to experience? How will you address student morale when they are facing difficulties and feeling discouraged?  Discuss some of the methods and resources you will use to support your students.
