Penn State Tuition Freeze

For the first time in over 40 years, Penn State has frozen tuition for in-state students. The current price is set at $8,286 per semester. The Centre Daily Times report quotes, “Instead of a sliding scale of flat tuition at some campuses, more modest increases at some others, and the highest increase — still lower than last year — at the flagship campus, the final numbers were changed as he unexpectedly announced no spike for every in-state undergraduate.” The change creates a shortfall of $17 million. Barron said he has not yet discussed potential cost-cutting measures with his deans, vice presidents and department heads, making conjecture about where the money would come from premature. Penn State values keeping education accessible for Pennsylvania residents. Barron made a promise to hold the line on the information technology fee for the first time in 20 years for in-state students. Barron wants to keep a Penn State degree obtainable for every qualified Pennsylvanian, which makes up about 72% of the student body. For an in-state Penn State student, this is good news. We will be starting our tuition cost at the same rate last years freshman class did. However, this is not as beneficial for underclassmen because the price could go up again next year. Usually, tuition rises 2.7% a year, which is around 450 more dollars per semester. With this extra money, college students can just put it right in their savings for after school when they need to start paying off their loans.
