Thesis: New alpine constructions need to follow a model of self-sufficiency in order to protect the land that it is integrated with.
The architects of the New Monte Rosa Hut, perched high upon the Monte Rosa Massif (See featured image, Switzerland), would find the modesty of the early mountain builders out of place in our day and age. As I have discovered, the modest character of the mountain huts built in the Swiss Alps from 1863 to the mid-1900s is a veneer, masking an ulterior (and respectable) motive of scientific advancement. The image these huts project tend to conceal what the Swiss Alpine Club was truly doing when building these shelters – opening up the Alpine region to scientists and explorers to gain a better understanding of the mountains as well as the effects of high elevations and extreme climatic conditions on us mortals.
