Boy Meets World

If you grew up in the nineties, which most of us did, I’m sure that you’ll recall a show starring curly haired Cory Matthews and his introduction to a crazy little thing called life. I’m going to begin by saying, I’m completely in love with this show! Now I watch a lot of TV, A LOT OF TV, but I really have not found a show to fill the void that Boy Meets World left when it completed its syndication in 2000. Unlike most sitcoms geared towards youth and teens, this show provided three core themes that really made this a feel-good program; family, friends, and true love. Below are these three reasons why this show paved the way for all “teenage sitcoms” alike!

1. Family

The Matthews are an iconic 90’s family. All three, and later four, children have a strong relationship with their parents and with one another. There isn’t a problem that a strong word from Alan or a soft hug from Amy can’t solve. Along with their relationship with their children, Amy and Alan Matthews constantly show their admiration and affection for one another. There’s no messy divorces, or teenage pregnancies! This show just gives you a nice family who love each other and are raising their kids the best they can!

2. Friends

The friendship of Cory Matthews and Shawn Hunter is a staple of this series. No matter what life throws at them, these two have each other’s back. Other examples such as Eric and Jack or Topanga and Angela are also part of the overall storyline. However, no relationship, sometimes not even Cory and Topanga, is more prominent than Cory and Shawn! All of these relationships show what true friendship is and how important the role of a friend is to a person’s life!

3. True Love

Cory and Topanga are the epitome of a true love story. From their first kiss in the 6th grade, to their wedding in their sophomore year of college, the two of them may have wavered, but they never gave up on their dream. We were introduced to Topanga in the third episode of the series and she stole our hearts along with Cory’s. Though we had to endure many break ups and hiccups in the road, Cory and Topanga enstilled the idea that if you find the one, even if they leave, they will always come back. Cheesy as anything, but come on, who doesn’t love a happy ending?

So there you have it, the reasons why I think Boy Meets World is awesome!!!! Let’s hope the Disney Channel sequel series Girl Meets World, which features Cory and Topanga 13 years after Boy Meets World ended. This series will follow the life of their daughter, Riley. I personally can’t wait!!

  4. Nick. YES. Just Yes. I love love loooove this show, it has actually been on my to-do list to find the series and rewatch it, so way to go in also loving it.

  5. YES! I’m completely and totally obsessed with this show! Shawn Hunter was my 1st crush, Topanga was who I wanted to be. I laughed, I cried, and I sometimes got really confused (the episode when they’re Russian spies?????). I still hate that Lauren chick that made Cory and Topanga break up and I’m still bracing myself for a flood of tears when the day comes that Mr. Feeny dies. I’m super pumped that you wrote about Boy Meets World and I really want to go watch it now….

  6. Such a good show! Unlike many shows today (sadly), it definitely did exhibited core values. I didn’t know there was going to be a sequel on Disney Channel. I’m a bit skeptical about whether or not they can do it justice.
