History facts about the Titanic!

Considering I watched one of my favorite movies this week, I decided to go into a little bit of depth about the Titanic. The Titanic, wasn’t just a movie (contrary to what some may believe). It was actually a gigantic cruise shit, who’s first journey was set to sail from Southhampon England, to New York. It stopped in countries like Ireland, France, and Cherbourg before hitting to sea for what was meant to be a luxurious trip for the Titanic’s passengers.

The great Titanic was built in an insane 3 years! Builders worked non stop, everyday on the giant, over seen but designer Cunard Mauretania. Cunard also built ships including the Lusitania (which was sank when it was hit by U-boat, or German Submarines, during the war). The downing of the Lusitania killed a total of nearly 1,200 people. Although Cunard was a wonderful ship builder, he seemed to forget a few things while designing the Titanic, such as the fact that it was missing a few life boats. Onboard were 16 lifeboats, that could hold a total of 1,178 people exactly. The issue was there were 2,435 people onboard the night that the titanic sank in the middle of the Freezing Cold North Atlantic. That leaves 1,257 people to fend for themselves in the cold waters, battling sharks, hypothermia, and drowning. Another flaw was that the bottom of the Titanic was filled with 18 “watertight” bulkheads, that although they were “watertight” water could spill from bulkhead to bulkhead. This unlitimately was the Titanic’s great flaw.

The day the Titanic set sail from Southhampton, England, the boat was jam packed with wealthy, filthy rich people, as well as some poor and middle class civilians just hitching a ride over to new york. The boat departed on April 10th, 1912, and tragically sank a short 4 days into the trip on April 14th. The crash took place around 11:30 pm that night in the middle to the ice North Atlantic. On a beautiful, cloudless, calm night, the titanic struck a massive iceberg. The ship suffered a 300 foot across gash in the hull and began to fill with water. Officers began filling lifeboats with as many people that could fit (obviously forgetting about Jack and Rose HAHA) but left thousands out to drown. The ship finally sank leaving survivors with nothing but the calm ocean covered in debris in it’s path.

Today the Titanic is one of the most studied shipwrecks by historians and researchers. The boat lies on the bottom of the Atlantic ocean covered in sea life. Many of it’s items still on board INTACT. A wonderful reminder of how carelessness cannot be taken lightly as in the case of the Titanic.
