Summary

Siberia is a vast land, and it hosts many unique and intriguing cultures. About half of the world’s languages are severely endangered to the point that they will likely be extinct by the end of the 21st century, and Siberia hosts several of these. Some languages, like Ket, may even hold the key to solving historical and linguistic mysteries and making new discoveries. Therefore, preservation is important here just as it is in areas like South America, New Guinea, and Australia. Many groups are alive and well, and though they still may suffer from the influence of the area’s dominant language Russian, their identity and culture provide useful tools in keeping the languages alive and their culture vibrant. Though challenges remain, Siberian peoples and the languages they speak stand on the threshold of a promising future in which ongoing preservation efforts could hold the key to revitalization in the most remote corners of the Russian Federation.
