Learning a foreign language revealed a world I never knew existed

Growing up in a small town in North Carolina, Lauren Collins never needed to speak a foreign language outside of high school Spanish classes. It wasn’t until she met her French-speaking husband and moved to Switzerland that she felt the need to become bilingual. She offers her humble opinion on the value of learning a new language.

Expanding opportunities for our students with language immersion


In his weekly message, filmed at W.B. Simpson Elementary, Governor Markell highlights the World Language Immersion Initiative and announces its expansion.

“All of our young people deserve access to the best possible education and training for their futures. That means supporting them in reading, writing, math, and science, and helping them acquire key skills for jobs in growing industries. But, we must not overlook the value of language learning,” Governor Markell said. “We will ensure that students’ language proficiency doesn’t drop off when they reach middle school by allowing them to take courses in subjects like social studies and science in their immersion language. Our goal is to make Delaware the most bilingual state in the country. Doing so will create incredible opportunities for these students, and it will keep Delaware moving forward.”

Education matters: Learning world languages ….

In the face of this reality, Kentucky high schools and colleges are turning to performance-based assessments and real-world experiences to help students acquire life-long foreign language skills.

Engaging the world: U.S. global competence for the 21st century

Website by the American Council on Education and Coalition for International Education , which highlights the urgent need for international and foreign language education to become part of the core mission of the educational system in the United States.

The website was created to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the HEA-Title VI and Fulbright-Hays programs of the U.S. Department of Education. It features features two videos and 13 additional brief interviews with Title VI/Fulbright-Hays beneficiaries who are currently employing their knowledge and expertise both at home and abroad. The experts interviewed work in business, diplomacy and international peace, economic and health care development, education, and military security and peacekeeping. All videos are viewable online and downloadable.

“The Joint National Committee for Languages is a national policy organization concerned with language and international education. The National Council for Languages and International Studies is its public advocacy arm. Every year for the past 25 years, JNCL and NCLIS have held a Legislative Day and Delegate Assembly in the nation’s Capital. Representatives of JNCL-NCLIS’ 65 member organizations visit Members of Congress and their staff to discuss issues important to language professionals. The presentation contains guidelines developed from these meetings and a simulation of a congressional staff meeting.”
