Today in COMM 100 Dr. Waters came in and gave two LEAP groups some tricks of the trade when it comes to staying on top of your game at college. He made it clear that tactics that worked in high school will most definitely not be enough to excel in college. Even though your typical class time in college will only be a couple hours a day, the full-time part comes from outside studying and reading. In class, professors will expect you to have knowledge from online resources or from the book when you come to class. Devoting outside time to your studies is crucial to success in college.
Dr. Waters spent a lot of time emphasizing how crucial it is to become acquainted with your professors and see their help during their office hours. He mentioned the fact that tutors will not be as effective as the professor when it comes to studying for an exam that the professor wrote. Not only do tutors cost money, but they are usually students whose area of expertise may not be as useful compared to the professor who has a degree on the subject. Even if you think you know the material, it is often useful to double-check to make sure you know it so well that you could teach it someone. Being familiar with the material is not enough to score highly on exams.
With this, he showed us many study habits that will become useful as exams become tougher. He reiterated that knowing how to study effectively is much more beneficial than studying words on a page for hours. Methods of studying are key to thriving in college. Dr. Waters shared a lot of useful tips and techniques that will make me more comfortable going into the fall semester!
