Recently, in-cylinder strategies to reduce emissions have demonstrated the potential to lessen the burden on, and likely the size and cost of, exhaust aftertreatment systems for diesel engines. These in-cylinder strategies for emissions abatement include injection rate shaping and multiple injections. These injection strategies can alter processes such as the soot formation and/or oxidation and unburned hydrocarbon consumption at low-temperature combustion conditions. In this study, we will use gas jets, a good approximation for diesel jets, to study the fluid mechanic mixing properties of multiple-injection schedules at a variety of conditions to provide design-level guidelines for injection schedule implementation in diesel engines.
