Primary and Secondary Sources

Primary Source

Roederer, I. U., & Lawler, J. E. (2012, April 17). Detection of Elements. The Astrophysical Journal, 750(76), 1-21.

  • The first detection of elements at all three r-process peaks in the metal-poor halo star HD 160617 were found by James Lawler and Ian Roederer. The elements include; arsenic and selenium, which have yet to be detected previously in halo stars. Elements like tellurium, osmium, iridium, and platinum have been previously found in these stars. This journal offers recent, up to date atomic transition probabilities and complete line component patterns for the elements. The discovery of arsenic and selenium is said to be surprising in light of predictions because the production of the lightest r-process elements generally should be decoupled from the heavier r-process elements.
