“Modern Day Slavery.”

sextrafficking

It is unquestionable that every person on this earth has the right to freedom. Sadly, modern day slavery has become a lucrative industry that has been competing with the drug, arms and wildlife smuggling businesses for decades. The Polaris Project, a human trafficking awareness organization, has revealed staggering statistics about the human trafficking industry. For example, 27 million people in the world are the captives of modern-day slavery. 800,000 people are trafficked across international borders every year and 80% of all transnational victims are women and children. 161 countries are affected by human trafficking and $32 billion is the total yearly profits generated by the industry, $15.5 billion made in industrialized countries and $9.7 billion in Asia (Polaris).

Why is human trafficking a booming business? There are two forms of human slavery. One is labor trafficking, such as forcing people to become domestic servants and farmworkers, and sex trafficking where people are coerced into the commercial sex trade against their will. The demand for labor and sex trafficking thrives because of the low risk associated with some government and community institutions. Many of these institutions are either not trained to respond to human trafficking or have ineffective laws that don’t address the crime. Safety nets for victims do not exist in many cases and the high profits associated with the industry leads traffickers to broaden their business.

How do traffickers obtain their “product”? They lure unsuspecting victims into a scheme by using violence, threats, false promises, debt, bondage, or any other form of control. So these women and children are kept in venues that house the trafficker’s own version of the sex industry. These venues include fake massage businesses, Internet based dating services, residential brothels, hostess and strip clubs, and truck stops. There is this horrible stigma that suggests women who are lured into the sex industry or workers who are forced into labor trafficking either wanted to be in their position or deserve it because they were naïve enough to be tricked into something so dangerous. But no person consents to human trafficking and the initial consent of the person does not change the severity of the crime or the urgency of rescue.

People need to become aware of the dangers associated with the human trafficking industry. More importantly, aggressive action needs to be taken to free the prisoners and strip the traffickers of their power, authority, and connections. More government and community officials need to have adequate resources in order to combat this industry and awareness organizations such as The Polaris Project and We Are Not For Sale need to have more support and recognition in order to reach out to victims.

Still, there are some efforts being made in order to combat the increasing human trafficking industry and federal anti-trafficking efforts have increased awareness and action related to this issue, such as the Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of Justice, and Department of Labor. But why is the human trafficking industry still flourishing even with all this help? It comes down to knowledge and spreading awareness through networks that reach at-risk youth, women, and undocumented immigrants.  Without available information or the knowledge concerning the dangers associated with this industry, the number of victims, traffickers, and revenue will continue grow which is an option that is simply unacceptable.

  72. I shook my head and cringed the entire time I read this. Like what the hell man? I mean I knew about human trafficking, and I knew it’s extent, and even how horrible it really was, but I guess I never REALLY thought that hard about it. Well, I just thought hard about it, and it’s actually sickening.

This is 2013. The world seems to be changing for the better, but we still have bullshit like this? Are you kidding me? Like are you actually kidding me? I have a legitimate question for anyone out there that knows anything about this. Why is this still a thing? Do you really need THAT many resources to track it down and destroy it? Any more than a drug empire? This is hurting many more innocent people than a drug ring, arguably.

This could totally be considered terrorism, with the amount of people that are being “terrorized” and the amount of people this is hurting. It’s disgusting. Where is Liam Neeson when we need him?!

  73. This is definitely a sad blog post. I find it extremely troubling to know that there are girls our age who are being bought and sold into sex slavery. Many of these girls come from Eastern European countries, most are young, and none consent to the jobs they get.

The tough part about human trafficking is a) these networks of people are usually somewhat small, so harder to trace (there are just many, small networks) and b) these paths of sale are mostly international. I think the UN and Interpol both have to do a better job in tracking down sex slave victims and their captors. Because from a legal perspective, it is hard to nail down a man from Bulgaria when he sold women form Ukraine through a channel in Mexico to the United States where they worked as sex slaves in a brothel. If a U.S. agent busts the brothel, who is ultimately at fault? I think international law and enforcement has to change, especially as our world becomes increasingly small, and movement of sex slaves becomes easier.

So basically, to answer your question as to how we stop this, it will have to come through a combined international effort. While this is highly idealistic, it’s possible. I haven’t heard of a person who thinks sex trafficking is a good thing (except for the traffickers themselves).

  74. I knew human trafficking was an issue but I had no idea that it was to that extent. It is truly sickening that there are sick people in the world that are willing to exploit innocent people to make a profit. After your reading your post, I discovered articles such as this one: http://www.womensfundingnetwork.org/resource/past-articles/enslaved-in-america-sex-trafficking-in-the-united-states. This girl was manipulated into becoming a sex slave when she was only 14 years old. She was beaten, locked in closets, and had her finger broken by her pimp. If she didn’t bring home at least $500 a night, she would be reprimanded to an even greater degree. This is absolutely terrifying to me. But what is worse is that this man was making over half a million dollars a year between his four girls. There are many pimps out there that generate an even greater profit.
After being prostituted for many years, now this girl is actually working with the Polaris Project you referenced in your post. She makes a good point when she says the media glamorizes pimps in music, videos, and shows like “Pimp my Ride.” I believe more attention needs to be put towards this issue because I am sure most people are unaware of the degree to which it occurs and the severity to what these victims go through. The most shocking statistics that I read included that the average age of entry into prostitution is between 12 and 14, but some girls start as young as 9; and every year, 1 million innocent children are exploited by the global commercial sex trade. This is frightening and more things need to be done in order to put a stop to this. You are right though, some countries don’t have strict laws against it and some cultures so not even think it’s bad. These things make it so difficult to find a cure, but one definitely needs to be found.
