Engineering Staff & Dependents Education Award

This award provides $500 in financial assistance to College of Engineering full-time staff or their dependent to be used for educational expenses in any degree or certificate program (undergraduate or graduate) at any Penn State campus, including World Campus, or Penn College. The recipient will be selected by the Staff Advisory Committee Awards Sub-Committee. The funds will be deposited directly into the student’s bursar account for use during the upcoming academic year.

Criteria:

  • Applicant (or parent/guardian of dependent applying) must be employed full-time by the CoE and employed by the CoE for at least the 12 months preceding application.
  • Applicant must be registered as a student in a degree or certificate program (undergraduate or graduate) for the semester (summer or fall) funds are awarded.
  • Applicant must have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA in the program. If just starting the program and no transcript exists, this criterion is waived.
  • Dependents must write their own essay.
  • This award may be received only once. However, there is no limit on the number of times someone may apply.  

To apply, email a one-page essay describing applicant’s educational goals and how their coursework will impact/contribute to their career aspirations to coestaffadvcommittee@engr.psu.edu.

Submission must include applicant’s name, relation to staff member if a dependent, degree or certificate program registered in, cumulative GPA (if applicable), and 9-digit PSU number. Submission deadline is April 30, 2020.

Staff of the Semester Award

The College of Engineering’s Staff of the Semester Award was established to recognize a staff member who exemplifies the following four criteria.

  • Exhibits creativity, innovation, and initiative.
  • Demonstrates the ability to mentor, inspire, motivate, and support others.
  • Promotes excellence in teamwork, performance, and achievement within the unit and/or the organization.
  • Demonstrates commitment to and support of University values, including integrity, respect, responsibility, discovery, excellence and community. 

Award recipients will receive a $99.99 gift card and be recognized in the quarterly staff newsletter, as well as be acknowledged at the College’s annual award ceremony in November. Anyone wishing to nominate a qualifying staff member in the College of Engineering can submit their Application Form to coestaffadvcommittee@engr.psu.edu.

Submission Deadlines:

  • Spring – nominations open end of April/close late May
  • Summer – nominations open early August/close mid-September
  • Fall – nominations open early December/close mid-January

College of Engineering Staff Professional Development Award

The Professional Development Award specifically designed so staff may receive funding for professional development activities that they may not ordinarily participate in as part of their current position.

This award provides up to $1,500 in financial assistance to staff members (full-time/approved reduced schedule under HR105 full-time staff) so they may participate in a professional development activity such as a conference, workshop, or non-credit class. Travel costs such as lodging, mileage, car rental and fuel, airfare, baggage fees, applicable meal per diems, and registration fees may be covered by the award.

Criteria:

  • Applicant must be a College of Engineering staff employee (as defined above).
  • Staff employee must have been employed in the College of Engineering full-time for at least 12 months prior to January 31 of current year.
  • Activity location must be in the continental United States.
  • All travel and expenses must comply with PSU Travel Policy TR02. https://policy.psu.edu/policies/tr02
  • Award may be received only once but there is no limit on the number of times you may apply.
  • A letter of support from the staff member’s immediate supervisor, signed by both the supervisor and Department Head, supporting the proposed professional development activity must be submitted to coestaffadvcommittee@engr.psu.edu by January 31. The letter must state how the activity will benefit the applicant and why they are deserving of this award. Letter must also state whether the Department or the applicant will be responsible for payment of any expense that may exceed the amount awarded to applicant.

To apply for the award, submit the completed Application Form and support letter to coestaffadvcommittee@engr.psu.edu by January 31.  Winner will be notified by mid-February.

Annual Staff Awards Ceremony & Reception

Each November, staff members in the College of Engineering are recognized at an award ceremony and reception for their years of service. The event is co-hosted by the Harold and Inge Marcus Dean of Engineering and the Staff Advisory Committee. Gifts are presented to employees who have 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 35 continuous years of service to Penn State University.
