Irish Dance vs. Tap Dance

There are certain things that you never tell an irish dancer. 1) that they clog and 2) that they river dance. Every time I tell someone that I irish dance, they say “oh so you clog”. No, I don’t “clog” I “irish dance”. Clogging and irish dance are commonly confused and it gets annoying. The fundamentals of the two types of dance are completely opposite of each other. Clogging is a form of tap dance that is louder and not as sophisticated. (thats the first insult, loud and unsophisticated?)

In clogging, you wear a shoes that is fake leather and it has a small heel with metal pieces on the bottoms. These shoes are not very sturdy and do not allow for that much technical footwork. Irish dance hard shoes are leather and have fiberglass tips on the bottom. They also have a flat surface at the top to make fancy footwork easier and safer.s0361l

The other main difference iin the two styles of dance it where you place your arms while dancing. Irish dancers have to keep their arms completely by their sides. The goal for an irish dance is for it to look like you took a pole and replaced it with their spinal cord. No part of your body should move from the waist up. In tap dance or clogging you can move your arms all around, and you are encouraged to move your arms as it helps you get off the floor to make the sounds. Tap dancers need a push to get off of the ground to make the sounds but irish dancers have to rely completely on our legs to do all of the work for us.Hard-Shoes Riverdance is an amazing show that is famous for bringing the style of irish dance to America. Michael Flatley created this show and toured it all of the world for years. The thing that is not understood it that this is only a show. I do not river dance because that is not a thing. I could possibly perform in Riverdance, but I am not a river dancer. Its about time that people understand the true talent and hard work that it takes for irish dancers to do what we do. Don’t try to compare it to any other American sport. Irish dance is it’s own truly amazing art form that requires hard work and ridiculous strength. (ok I’m a little bias, but its true.)riverdance_bg

Paper #4 Draft

Abstract

General Education is very important in a student’s life. General education is used to diversify the education of a student by building experience. General education is the way that a student can get involved in different areas of study and get better-rounded education. Without general education classes, a student lacks the experience needed to bring new ideas to the world. General education should be used to let students explore new areas  of study in ways that will let the students connect to those areas of study later in life. These classes should be used to encourage the students to think in new innovative ways that are outside of their major.

Introduction

The Gen Ed reform plan highlights three possibilities for education: themes, skills, and exploration. Right now the Gen Ed program has many options and has little limitations. When we first started discussing, the general majority was in favor of the exploration option for Gen Eds. This option is based mostly on freedom in your education. There would be a small requirement for skills and themes, but the majority of he courses could be random. The problem is that this option can lead to easy classes that lack rigor. The other popular option was the skills option. Many people felt as though skills are a very important base for education. It was also discussed that the knowledge learned in skills classes is applicable to every major and is useful in everyday life. If this was the only option than there would be no exploration or variation in learning or education. The least popular option is the themes option. There are many issues with this idea. Most students are questioning what they want to do when they get to college and want to explore the options offered. Making them not only specialize in their major, but also in their Gen Eds is challenging and offers less room to broaden your education. By making the students categorize their Gen Eds, they limit their own experiences and don’t have as rich of an education in the end.

The plan that should be put into place is skills based exploration. This would be beneficial to the students because it would open doors to new experiences, but also teach the skills the students need in everyday life. The university should take the Gen Ed courses offered and work in more writing components and other skill based learning techniques to teach students how to apply the skills learned to new fields and teach them how to diversify their skills; the students would have the freedom that they desire while also learning the skills that they need.

Themes

The new concept on the table is the themes option. This option highlights the appeal of containing your education to a basic theme. Themes can be interdisciplinary courses that are focused into one broad concept of learning. This option is good for general education because it makes the program more structured and gives general education more of a focus. General education can be thought of as unorganized and pointless; themes give the building block classes a meaningful purpose in a students education.

Themes in education seem like a good idea, however there are many problems with this learning technique. Experts raise the questions of transfer credits. With this unique system it would make it very hard for a student to transfer to Penn State and still graduate in the standard four-year period. It will also affect someone who changes majors. Will certain majors become associated with certain general education themes? This option is good, but alone it causes more problems that are not evident in the exploration and skills option.

Exploration

The exploration option is the most freedom-based option. Exploration allows students to be introduced to new areas of study. This will diversify the students learning and allow them to be exploring the different options offered at the university. This option differs from the Themes option because it does not limit the courses available to the students to fill the general education requirements. By limiting the students education the students are not gaining enough experience in other fields other than the students major.

Many professionals use the argument that exploration based general education is not “rigorous” enough. These courses are thought of as easy course that a students uses to boost his or her GPA. This makes general education feel like a waste of time, credits, and money due to the courses being spot fillers and useless requirements. General education is not taken seriously and is given a reputation of being easy “A” classes. Adding themes can fix the rigor issue that is evident in the current general education curriculum. By taking away the exploration aspect, you limit the students freedom in college and don’t let them gain the experience needed to survive in the world outside of college.

Skills

The basis of education is the skills based general education curriculum. This program would incorporate more courses to teach the students the essentials for surviving in the 21st century. Every student needs a very strong foundation in the areas of reading, writing, and technology. These are the most important components because they can be applied to every area of study and are utilized in everyday life. Life will be a struggle if a student does not learn and practice these necessary skills early on in their education.

Students pay approximately $201 a month on a ten year loan on their general education courses. An educator says, “$201 a month is a bargain if the GenEd curriculum helps our students land excellent jobs. And we know from talking to employers that they want the very skills the GenEd curriculum is designed to cultivate: written and verbal communication skills, numeracy, global fluency and critical thinking.” Skills based learning is the most essential area that employers look for in potential applicants. If you cannot use these skills correctly, you will struggle to find employment and you will not get a good return on the investment that is your education.

The Reform

The general education program at Penn State should be a combination of the skills and exploration based learning. The exploration option allows the students their first taste of freedom in their education. This can diversify the student’s learning and introduce them to many new fields of study. The skills option is the building blocks for all areas of study. These basic skills are the most important components to education and are essential for getting jobs in the future. To combine these options, the exploration-based courses should be required to incorporate a certain amount of reading, writing, and technology so the students can learn the basics in every field they study. This option will create a strong foundation for learning and will also give the freedom in education that the students desire. This option does not incorporate the themes option due to the lack of freedom that this option creates. If a student would like to center their education on a theme, they can do just that. Not every student should be required to limit their education, but the option should be available if any one student would wish to do so.

The Set Dance…

Set dances are the staple of an irish dancers competition. This is the last dance a judge sees before the final scores are given. In the other 2 rounds the dancers dance in groups of two or three. This give some wiggle room in case you mess up. There is always the chance that the judges were not looking at you when you went off time or stopped. In the set dance round every dancer dances by themselves. This round is the most stylistic in nature. The hard shoe round and the soft shoe round are to show off your technique and your stamina. The set dance round is show off your skill and your style. At major competitions, your set dance round can pull you up to the world qualifiers, or destroy you and knock you down ten places.

Your set dance is completely customized to you and you can pick whatever song and tempo you want. My set dance is titled The King of the Fairies at speed 110. There are tons of songs you can choose from. If your doing a hornpipe set, many popular choices are The King of the Fairies, Humors of Bandon, The Drunken Gauger, Miss Brown’s Fancy, and Planxty Davis at speeds 68-72. If you are doing a trouble jig set, many popular choices are Planxty Drury, The Storyteller, The Blackthorn Stick, The Three Sea Captains, The Ace and Deuce of Pipering, and The Downfall of Paris at speeds 108-110. This dance is the most important component to compeition and you cannot mess it up.

The Worlds…

This is an exciting time of year for the irish dance community. The Worlds is only 1 week away. Every year the Worlds is in a different country; this year the World Championships are in London. This time next week, the best irish dancers will be spray tanning their legs and packing their shoes into a carryon bag. The Worlds is the most prestigious competition an irish dancer can go to.

Usually every age division has a world champion who has been winning the worlds since they were allowed to qualify, but this year things are getting shaken up. One of the best schools in the world, Butler Fearon O’Connor, is not allowed to compete at the worlds due to a judging conflict. This dance school alone has 3 world champions and countless girls

who were on the podium. This means the worlds is giong to be a bloodbath with girls trying to get those awards. It’s going to be very interesting to see who will take the crown (literally you get a crown too.).

I mentioned before that the Butler Fearon O’Connor school is not allowed to compete. This is due to an adjudication and association rule that was put into place a fews years ago. The rule basically states that if your school has had any association with the adjudicators at the Worlds within a year of the competition than your school cannot compete. This rule aims to solve the issue of fixed results.

IMG_2287 Another interesting component that was just recently banned from competition is the worlds globe on the back of your dress. Up until last year, if you had won the worlds ever than you could put a globe patch on your dress. Everyone knew who the world champions were and they were treated like celebrities. This trend became an issue because judges would judge based off of the globe on their dress and not the dancing on the stage. One year a dancer did an experiment and wore a globe on her dress even though she was not a champion. That year she got 8th at the worlds and every other year she didn’t even make the recalls. This has since been banned because the results were very skewed. Various other attempt at this have ben made. Schools have tried to put school logos on their students dresses, and there is a new trend out recently that is very similar. Dancers will put their names on the back of their dresses so everyone knows who is dancing. A judge may know of a dancer, but they don’t recognize them. The dancer is literally screaming to the judge their real identity. Its like the dancers are not confident in their dacning alone. They don’t believe in just leaving it on the stage.

Personal Stake

Gen eds are an important component to college education. They make learning diverse and interesting. When students start college, they think they know what the want to do with their lives, but they really don’t. Gen ed courses introduce them to subjects they never imagined they’d like and help the students make life changing choices. These courses are the only opportunity a student has to individualize their education and make it interesting for them. The major requirements can be painful to learn and a student needs a break sometimes.

Something great about gen eds is that it is unorganized. A student can take any combination of courses and get the correct requirements for graduation. This is great because you can explore as many options in education that you want and be introduced to an unlimited number of fields. If students don’t have the opportunity to be educated in fields other than their majors, than they will not be able to integrate those topics into their future. The careers the students choose will not be as diverse and will be lacking in innovative ideas.

Paper #3 Draft

State Paddy’s Day is a student made holiday in State College, PA. Originally, the holiday was created due to the fact that ST. Patrick’s Day was over spring break. The students wanted to celebrate the holiday with their friends here at State College, and thus a drinking holiday was created. This holiday tends to bring in students from other schools around the state which causes trouble for the town and the University. In the article State Patty’s Day 2014: Penn State Makes Biggest Effort Yet to Keep State College Dry on Unofficial Drinking Holiday, they talk about issues with State Paddy’s Day and the correct way to solve this issue.  The current strategy for stopping state paddy’s day is closing the bars in state college. Closing the bars in State College will not stop the student made holiday because The bars lose money, it encourages house partying, and it attracts unwanted attention to state college.

According to the article, every bar was compensated for the loss in revenue for state paddy’s day. Penn State University paid for the town of state college to go dry for state paddy’s day. Every bar was given an amount ranging from $2,500 – $7,500 to eliminate alcohol for the entire weekend. There is a better way to spend students money on campus. This tactic hurts the students who don’t party or who aren’t old enough to go the bars being paid off. Also, this hurts the town. The bars are a large part of the economic growth of State College. They will lose money and could be financially hurt from the loss of sales. Countering that argument, it could be said that this money is being invested in the student’s future. If this holiday is stopped now, than the students in the future will not have to deal with the problems associated with this holiday.

Closing the bars in town will not stop the partying. This holiday is an issue mostly because it brings in busloads of students from branch campuses and other schools that cause problems. These students are not drinking age, but that doesn’t stop them. Closing the bars will only stop those who are legally able to drink in the bars. This strategy will encourage secret and illegal partying. House parties will become popular so students can avoid the public and the police. The only good idea about making the town of state college dry is the fact that they also closed the bottle shops, and beer distributers. If the students can’t get the alcohol, than they can’t party and get in trouble.

The article states that all out of towers found with alcohol will be prosecuted right away. This sounds like a good way to deal with problems students, but it will draw more attention to the town and what goes on here. The holiday may not have been as big of a deal if there wasn’t so much attention put on the subject. On the other hand, if the students know that the police are serious about enforcing the law, it will scare them into not drinking and in part stop the holiday in the end.

State paddy’s day is an issue that needs to be dealt with, but closing the bars is not the option. It hurts the town, encourages house partying and attracts unwanted attention to Penn State. This is a hard issue to deal with, but the current tactics will not stop the holiday.

Rince na Leon

You might have wondered if there is standard for steps in irish dance. Every school does their own version of customized steps and choreography. There have been problems in the past with schools stealing choreography and using it in competition. A dancers Choreography can make or break them, and judges can like certain moves over others. The best schools in the world are notorious for bringing new innovative ideas to the table in style and steps. Schools are very serious about their choreography. In irish dance there is also a problem with schools being greedy. Every school wants to be a powerhouse, and they will do anything to get on top. Schools who want to win combine with schools who actually do win and now there is one giant school that just wins everything. This angers the irish dance community because the worse schools get credit for the best choreography.  If you steal moves from another school your entire school can face suspension from competition and/or get extra community service hours at local majors.

Since we’re nearing the end of blogging I think it’s time to talk about the Penn State Irish Dance group on campus. Rince na Leon was founded in the spring of 2011. We have ties with the Penn State Irish Student Society and are committed to spreading the Irish heritage around State College. We have performed at many events on campus like 100 days until THON, THON, homecoming, and at the last football home game of the season. We practice twice a week for 2 hours in the White building and you don’t need to know irish dance to join.

Happy St. Patricks Day!!

As you might have guessed St. Patrick’s Day is a very important holiday for irish dancers. Dancers are busy performing in nursing homes, schools, community centers, restaurants, and bars for hours during this crazy time of year.

St. Patricks Day or the Feast of St. Patrick originated in the seventeenth century. It was originally celebrated to mark the death of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. It is a day to celebrate your irish heritage, and wear green. The green color represents the shamrock, which St. Patrick used to represent the holy trinity. People often refer to this holiday as St. Patty’s day, but I recently learned that this is incorrect. The holiday is officially known as either St. Patrick’s Day or St. Paddy’s Day and nothing else. In the United States these days, St. Patricks day has become less of a religious holiday and more of a drinking holiday. But nonetheless, it is a day to show your irish spirit.

Over the past week I have been going on tours with my dance studio around bethlehem, Allentown, Hatfield, and Philadelphia. We have a set show list for every venue and the weekend of the big day we dance from 6 am until 11 pm everyday. It can get very exhausting, but thats what makes it fun.

On a side note, the Penn State Irish dance Performance Group Rince na Leon is celebrating St. Patricks day with performances all day at Kildare’s on College Ave. If your looking for a fun way to celebrate the your irish heritage, what better way than with irish dancers! I hope you all have a great St. Patrick’s Day!
