There are powerful feminists throughout our country and all over the world. the power of these worldwide feminists can be powered through the social media network that is so popular in today’s culture. It is amazing in itself that feminists across the world can even broadcast their views and advocate for change despite the vast distance between them.
Emma Watson as a feminist
Females certainly have come a long way to be able to speak up and fight for their rights. That said, Emma Watson is a great example of a powerful female feminist. I think she speaks eloquently about the need for change and power of feminism. These types of effort I see as being extremely influential and those actions I will always consider to be “enough”. I think what harms the feminist movement, or is “not enough” is that the topic of feminism has become a pop culture hot topic in Hollywood. I think celebrities hold a different type of power, not so much as to say that they are inspiring, but that they hold the power of influence and persuasion. That said, unfortunately, when celebrities make comments against feminism that contribute to myths (i.e. man-hating, feminists are homosexual, feminists being extremely liberal, etc) I feel that those comments spread to the public far more quickly than the inspiring comments made by the well-educated feminists.
Azealia’s minds
For example, Azealia Banks recently made comments about feminism on twitter stating, “Black Women helped the “feminists” gain the right to vote and they turned around and shitted on us. Leaving us in the dark. With nothing. I don’t trust any woman who says she’s a feminist. No matter what color she is. I am a womanist. Please leave me out of your feminist articles and feminist discussions. Thanks. Xx-AB”
While I understand that she feels that black women are discriminated against in different ways than white women, and face their own challenges, I feel that her comment is problematic and can cause misunderstandings to the public. It is a disservice to feminists and feminism to spread the idea that feminists are not to be trusted, that the goal of feminism to to discriminate against races, or that speaking about feminism is wrong. Rather than promoting one race over the other, as feminists we should join together to discuss our challenges and become more powerful by joining together in struggles. Do you feel that celebrities help or hurt the meaning of feminsim?
