What is Courseware?

Courseware is any digital, educational application or software used by students or educators for a class.

Why does Courseware need to be reviewed and authorized by Penn State?

There are legal and policy standards that Courseware should comply with including privacy, security, and accessibility considerations. Selecting already reviewed Courseware can save you time.

What Courseware has already been reviewed?

A list of reviewed Courseware is available on the Reviewed Courseware List. The Courseware you wish to use may have already been reviewed. This list is periodically updated, please check the list prior to use each semester.

What do I do if the Courseware I want is not on the list of reviewed courseware?

Do Canvas learning tools need to be reviewed?

Yes. If you would like to request Courseware that integrates with Canvas, follow these steps on how to Request Courseware.

Is there a fee associated with Courseware on the Reviewed Courseware List?

Fees are not part of the review process. Courseware listed on the Reviewed Courseware List is not automatically paid for by Penn State. You will need to determine if there is a fee involved to use Courseware (either for the University or for students). This information should be obtained from the Courseware supplier. Instructors are responsible for following standard University Purchasing Policies, including Policy BS09, for any payments by the University for Courseware.
