South Dining Commons

South dining commons, also known as Redifer Common,  is a dining commons at Penn State housing eleven dining places in one convenient room. It also contains a buffet, so if you wish to eat buffet style, you have that option too. The nice thing about South, is that is has many different options for any food taste at anytime of the day. If you want Chinese, sushi, salad or even burritos, South has it all for you.

My favorite part about South is Late Night which runs from 9pm- 1am Monday-Thursday. Late Night always has a wide variety of food from pancakes and bacon to mozzarella sticks and baked ziti. Basically, anything you have a craving for- South has for you during the hours you want it at. One of the best places at South is “In a Pickle” where they make Panini’s and subs with whatever you want on it. The line is always so long because the Panini’s are amazing!

Overall, I give South 4.5/5 stars. It’s probably my favorite dining commons and I’d definitely recommend checking it out!

Leyla Wydler, Heroic or Reckless?

Leyla Wylder was a sussessful broker on Wall Street working for the Stanford Financial Group before something happened that changed her life entirely. She discovered that there was a masisive fraud in her company, a Ponzi Scheme. It threatened to damage the lives of so many innocent people and Leyla was not about ready to have that happen.

She spoke out against her company by sending a letter to the SEC and even went on to talk to  the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD). Leyla gained a lot of publicity as a whistleblower in the financial industry, and this would come to help and hurt her reputation in the eyes of different people.

Personally, I think Leyla was a hero. She did what was morally right in face of opposition and did not let the mere consequence of losing her job be a deterrent to her determination.

Lawrence Kohlberg was a prominent psychologist who created the stages of moral development. They range from pre-conventional, in which a person measurse an action by its direct consequences (such as losing your job), not giving consideration to anything else. Leyla, however, is in the post-conventional stage of development, where people view rules and laws as general guidelines but are willing to act differently if they think something is morally wrong and needs societal change. People who are in the Post-Conventional stage of development act because it is the right thing to do and they don’t fear punishment for their actions.

Leyla did just this. She acted not based on  rules, but based on the morally right thing to do- even though it was difficult and made her go against her company. For this, Leyla is a hero; she was not afraid to act despite the possibility that her entire life could fall out from under her. This is why Leyla Wydler should be seen as a hero.

Pollock Dining Commons

If you’re like me and you live in Pollock residence halls, there is a 99.99% chance you’ve eaten at the dining commons before.  This dining commons facility was renovated in 2012 and features sophisticated decor, a 10,000 square-foot kitchen space and serves food in an all-you-can-eat fashion.

Upon first arrival, I felt like a kid in the candy store at Pollock dining commons. There is food in all directions, and the fancy glasses they give you make you feel like you’re at a five-star restaurant. The food is endless and you can either be healthy or gain the freshman fifteen in one meal.

While I enjoy the ever consistent salads, burgers, stir fry, pizza, pasta and sub stations, I feel as though the overall variety is lacking. How many times can you really have the same 6 options? Also, the food at Pollock is slightly bland. I find myself grabbing the salt at every meal and putting on almost all of my food (no judgement about my dietary habits please…)

One of the better things about Pollock though is the breakfast. While I’m not a fan of their lunch and dinner, I think Pollock has one of the better breakfasts. There are many more options than lunch/dinner and the make your own omelet station is super delicious.

Overall, I’m giving the food at Pollock a 3 out of 5.  I’d definitely say check it out; odds are you’ll like it the first couple of times.
