I found our class on Access Database Design to be helpful with my understanding of how a database is created.  Having an overview of what you wish to accomplish aids in creating the database.  This class has helped me better understand our departmental database. John Carnicella did a great job of helping us determine the information we needed for our database.  He guided us by stressing the best approach to creating a database is to have a vision for what you hope to accomplish.
