Matthew Dering is a Ph.D. student in Computer Science and Engineering. He has a Masters of Science in Computer Science from Penn State University. He is interested in Deep Learning and Computer Vision, especially as it relates to human activity and pose detection. He anticipates graduating at the end of 2017, and is currently part of the Design Analysis Technology Advancement (D.A.T.A.) Laboratory at Penn State.

His current research focuses on using Deep Learning to model human motion, with the objective of achieving better understanding of how people move and interact with a workspace, in a design context. He is also interested in larger questions raised by deep learning such as network design, optimization, and visualization. He is currently working on a project which will monitor a persons actions in a workspace and provide them with feedback about their performance.
