The New Year’s Best and Worst Book Buys

Since January is the month in which The Double Helix and the Law of Evidence is scheduled for publication, I thought I would see where it is selling and publicize any bargains. The list price is $45, but it is already discounted — and inflated!

The cheapest price I saw is $36 at Barnes and Noble. Amazon.com is very competitive, with today’s price being $36.67. That’s the good news.

Here’s the rogue’s gallery:

  • Books-A-Million claims that the retail price is $49.50. Club members get 10% off this special price.
  • Powell’s Books sells it for more, though: $56.95.
  • Biggerbooks.com quotes “List Price $59.99, Our Price $57.32, You save $2.67.”
  • Borders lists the book as one of the “Top 5 Forensic Science Books.” How’s that for instant success? Surely, it justifies the amazing price of $115.95. But no, the price is in Australian dollars. The U.S. store does not even carry it. So much for the Top 5.
