I‘m a junior majoring in management within the SMEAL College of Business. I was also a Supply Logistics Captain for THON 2018! Before that, I was a Rules and Regulations Security Leader and Committee Member.
Why do you think THON is important and meaningful on campus?
THON is something that is bigger than all of us. It is amazing to see over 16,000 student volunteers from all different backgrounds come together for one common goal: to end childhood cancer. We all understand that the event is not about us, but the families that are having the time of their lives. When we are at THON, we are all one family. It is truly amazing and something you can’t find anywhere else on campus.
How did you decide to become a dancer for THON?
Dancing in THON was something so small I could do to help my little heroes. Obviously standing for 46 hours strait, but it was nothing compared to what children and families impacted by childhood cancer face. I feel as though dancing in THON was my way of showing that I believe there is a cure, and I, along with so many others, will not stop fighting until we find one.
How does your work with THON give you the opportunity to use your gifts and passions?
Within Supply Logistics, I was responsible for contacting donors to obtain all house wear and cleaning supplies for THON. I, along with several other donor contacts, helped THON donate 96 cents of every dollar to the Four Diamonds. This year, I have found that I am so passionate about the donors of THON. Without them, none of this would be possible. It is unbelievable that so many people are willing to help us. I love using my gift of communication and my passion for THON to help the philanthropy be as successful as possible.
Why do you think THON makes a difference in this world?
THON is unlike anything in the world. We raise millions of dollars for an amazing cause, but I truly think the ability to spread awareness is what really makes a difference. So many times, I’ll go home and see strangers wearing THON gear. I’ll have complete strangers ask me what THON is and want to learn more. We are spreading awareness and reaching so many people to help end childhood cancer – this non-monetary part of THON is so unique. Also, we are allowing families to have the time of their lives during THON weekend and throughout the year at pre-THON events. Seeing these families smile and have fun is truly priceless, and every THON volunteer is needed and is truly making a difference.
