Tell us about your organization:
Free Pizza Friday is a collective of various faith organizations that comes together on every first Friday of the month in front of Forum Building to hand out slices of pizza to anyone who passes by. It was started a few years ago with the aim of combating stigma against Muslims, and to introduce the Penn State community to some of its own Muslims.
Why do you think your organization is important and meaningful on campus?
FPF is significant because of the motivation behind it. I think the idea of this type of community outreach is not only effective in achieving what we set out to do, but it genuinely brings individuals closer through kindness.
How did you decide to take on your role as Coordinator of Free Pizza Friday?
When the previous coordinator, Zain Jaffery, graduated, he approached me about taking the reins. I had worked with Free Pizza Friday previously, and fell in love with the idea and purpose of it. I felt it was a fantastic way to accomplish the goal of conveying that Muslims are a part of the community and that we like to have fun too.
How does your work with Free Pizza Friday give you the opportunity to use your gifts and passions?
As both a Muslim and someone who cares about giving back to the community, I love the opportunity FPF provides for bringing people of different backgrounds together under the same cause. I enjoy any opportunity for leadership, and with something like FPF that deals with value I appreciate, it felt like the stars really aligned for me.
Why do you think your organization makes a difference in this world?
We hope to make an impact through showing firsthand that Muslims are similar to anyone else through the simple action of giving. It’s not just about the pizza, it’s about sharing a moment with someone passing by, offering a smile, and wishing them a good day. It’s through these simple actions of kindness that we hope to better the world.
Anything to say for students who might want to join this club?
It’s a fantastic opportunity to take part in something that is fun, fulfilling, and purposeful for the community. If you’d like to take part in FPF in the future, come to the front of Forum building at 1:10PM on every first Friday! All are welcome to help!
