Hometown: Qaraghandy, Kazakhstan

Born: August 28, 1990

Education: The Pennsylvania State University

I was born in a small town called Zhezkazgan, Kazakhstan. At the age of six my family moved to Qaraghandy and we have been living there since then. I graduated valedictorian from the M. Zhumabaeyv School #92 in Qaraghandy in 2008 with the highest score on the National Tests in my school. After that I have decided that I want to study abroad and see the world.

In 2010 I received “Bolashak” International Scholarship, which allowed me to continue my education in more than 60 countries all over the world. I chose the United States. In June, 2010 I came to Urbana-Champaign, IL to learn the language and prepare myself for an American University. In 2011 I was accepted to The Pennsylvania State University where I am currently pursuing degree in Architecture.

I am planning to spend the Fall 2014 semester in Rome, Italy. It is a study abroad program offered by Penn State for the architecture students at the Pantheon Institute. Since the Middle Ages architects from all over the world visited Rome and practiced there. It is a great opportunity to experience rich history and architectural heritage of the ancient city and find inspiration for my future design work.

I was nominated to the “Best Design” award among first-year students. In June, 2012 my entry to the Zhambul 1 Historic Building Renovation Competition was one of the finalists. In January, 2014 I was awarded an Honorable Mention for the Hajjar Design Charette. My drawing of the Uffizi, Florence was personally noted by a respected professor of architecture Jamie Cooper and was displayed on the annual exhibition of the Department of Architecture at Penn State.

I have never questioned my choice of becoming an architect. It is a hard work that I enjoy doing every day. I have developed certain style through my education, but I am always open to new design approaches and ideas. I am particularly interested in the single-family housing and larger-scale residential housing design. I prefer minimalistic approach of the modernists and admire very simple and pure forms. I am also proficient in landscape design – the component many architectural schools neglect. In my projects I try to incorporate both mass of a building and the surrounding landscape.
