The Engineering and Community Engagement certificate has been developed specifically to permit students to create a learning experience, enabling community partnership, based on their individual interests. For example, a student may wish to focus on engineering and community engagement through a leadership development project, or a social entrepreneurship effort, or a civic engagement activity, and so on. Flexibility has been incorporated into the certificate requirements to permit such – in consultation with the certificate coordinator.
The 12 credits of core course requirements for the certificate are as follows:
- Community Engagement (3 cr)
- e.g. – CED 152, CED 230, CED 297A, CIVCM 211, EDSGN 451
- Others by approval of certificate coordinator
- U.S./International Cultures (3 cr)
- Optional, but should be appropriate to project-related activities
- Others by approval of certificate coordinator
- Collaborative Community-Based Project (3 cr)
- Design-based course in leadership, entrepreneurship, or service with a strong community-based component
- Elective (3 cr)
- e.g. – EDSGN 497C, EDSGN 455
- Others by approval of certificate coordinator
The certificate coursework may be used to satisfy requirements of a number of minors at the University. These include:
- Civic and Community Engagement Minor
- Leadership Development Minor
- Social Entrepreneurship Minor (HESE)
- Sustainability Leadership Minor
