Travel Guide to Cancun

As I promised last week, this week’s blog post will be devoted to my senior week getaway in Cancun, Mexico. As I already explained, Cancun is a magnificent vacation destination for those looking for a bit of a livelier tropical getaway. You probably already know that Cancun is one of the top spring break and senior week destinations for high school and college students, which makes it pretty crazy if you go at the right time (or wrong time). Even though I chose to experience the more chaotic side of Cancun, I’m sure that there are still many quiet, luxurious resorts for those that aren’t into the constant 24/7 party scene that Cancun offers.

However, my senior week group actually stayed at one of the largest party resorts in Cancun and as you can imagine, there was ALWAYS something going on. As soon as you wake up, you can go for a nice swim in the ocean before the abundant activities that the resort offers begin. By 12 o’clock, all of the all-inclusive bars are already open, the pool DJs are blasting music, and people are already getting rowdy by the pool and beach. Also, there is an entertainment staff on site that constantly organizes games making the drunk tourists do outrageous things. These games consisted of competitions such as push-up contests and booty shaking contests, but there were also fun, sports related activities such as beach volleyball, soccer, and football games that the entertainment staff would organize. In my opinion, the coolest thing about participating in such activities is simply getting to know other tourists from all over the world.

Another way to meet people is through the extraordinary nightlife of Cancun. If you choose to stay at the resort at night, there are usually one or two small nightclubs at the resort in addition to certain performances including acrobats and circus performers that are able to do ridiculous acts and stunts. While these nightly activities can be really entertaining, Cancun is mostly known for its unique nightclubs that are located towards the end of the hotel zone. With just 40 to 50 dollars, you can get a VIP table, unlimited drinks, and transportation to some of the greatest nightclubs in the world. While some of these nightclubs are full of American tourists, there are others that consist primarily of Mexican and South American natives for those of you that are looking to experience the true Mexican nightlife. My friends and I mostly only visited the large, famous nightclubs of Cancun, and my personal favorites were Daddy’O, Palazzo, and The City, which is the largest nightclub in Latin America.

Most of the clubs and tourist areas in Cancun are fairly safe, although you will certainly encounter a few drug dealers and hookers if you appear vulnerable. However, as long as you simply ignore them and confidently walk by, they will not give you any more trouble. The most important thing to remember when visiting Cancun is just to stay smart and avoid leaving the resort or nightclubs, especially alone or late at night. You should also remember to stay away from eating certain foods that appear dangerous, in addition to drinking the tap water anywhere in Cancun, even at your resort. As long as you follow these tips, you’re sure to avoid the infamous Montezuma’s revenge (traveler’s diarrhea) and have an amazing time in Cancun!

  1. This is awesome! My parents went to Cancun when I was little, but I was too young to go with them. It’s a place I’d really like to go because who else wouldn’t want to go there? It’s tropical and sounds like a wonderful place to go. It’s really cool you were able to go there for your senior week too. I can’t imagine the things that happened on that trip based on my own senior week trip. Your advice is really good to know as well!

  2. Awesome blog post! I have wanted to go to Cancun for some time now; I’m thinking that it’ll be the Spring Break destination of choice within the next couple of years. A few of my friends went to Cancun for their senior trip and they totally loved it. They described pretty much all of the events and activities that you did. Glad you had fun!

  3. I am insanely jealous that you went to Cacun for your senior trip when I only went to Ocean City. Consider me mad. It seems like your trip was crazy and awesome., and it’s impressive that your favorite part was meeting tourists from all over. I would find that pretty interesting . Thanks for the notes about what to avoid !
