Freedom. Love. America. What do you think of when you hear these words? Not sure? Well I know the first thing that comes to my mind: Sizzler; because nothing makes me feel more patriotic then eating my face out in a buffet. As much as we can appreciate this commercial for its incredible amusement, I can’t help but feel completely disappointed by this failed rhetoric. The cheesiness of it all is just on an entirely different level. The fact that the editors of this commercial actually sat down and thought that this looked and sounded good is beyond me, but hey, that’s the 90s I guess. Let’s just be thankful that we’re out of that decade. For so many reasons.
Anyway, back to the commercial. One of the main reasons I think that this commercial failed is that it overplayed ethos WAY too much. I’m pretty sure it tried to relate to everyone in America: A cowboy, a construction worker, a little girl playing baseball, a ridiculously sweaty jogger, etc. Even Captain Ahab from Moby Dick seemed to also make a guest appearance, even though it’s about 200 years too late. By trying to target so many different, random groups of people, the commercial came across as very puzzling and I did not understand how any of the scenes shown related to Sizzler’s Buffet at all. If I’m hungry for Sizzlers, I don’t want to be shown images of a jogger spraying her sweat all over the place, thank you very much. I want to just be shown pictures of incredibly delicious food that makes my mouth water. While I did see some good looking food in the commercial, I was so distracted by the other ridiculous things happening at the same time that I didn’t even really care about the food.
Take the one lady whose sex drive was apparently through the roof while shooting this commercial. The licking of the lips, the completely unprovoked make out session with an unsuspecting man?…I mean what is this?! Sizzler, are you trying to sell burgers or porn? That is what I would like to know. If Sizzler’s is a family friendly environment, then the target audience of this commercial should have been families across America, and this includes little children. Sorry, but I don’t really want my five and six year old cousins to see a lady try and swallow a guy with her tongue when they innocently turn on the TV.
The commercial used a lot of repetition to highlight the theme of redefining what is important to us as Americans. While normally, I would say this is a good theme, it does not fit the premise of the commercial whatsoever. When I am thinking about redefining what America means to me, the first thing that comes to mind is not Sizzler’s buffet. In fact, it is probably one of the last things on my mind. I am not sitting in my room, day in and day out distraught over the buffet future of America. It’s just not important to me (and I’m sure I’m not the only one). The commercial should have focused on a more lighthearted theme. Something humorous maybe, or at least something that made my taste buds tingle. This commercial just left me shaking my head….and wanting a nice, juicy burger from 5 Guys. Yep, that sounds pretty good right about now.
