Last WIP: My Favorite Passion Posts

If some of you read my passion post from last week, you’ll notice that I already did the assignment we have to do for this post. I posted some of my favorite travels from recent blog posts. So for this one, I will try to pick ones where I think my writing was far better than other posts.

1. Fockey Tours Europe Part I: I thought that I wrote this post pretty well because I had a lot to say about the first half of the trip and was able to provide a sufficient amount of detail for my audience. I think that I organized it pretty well too.

2. All We Wanted Was To Be Back At Penn State: I know that I brought this up in my last passion blog but I felt that this is another one of my strong posts. I thought that the way I wrote it to promote some dramatic effect and the story line was pretty intriguing to the audience especially since many people on campus had heard of the bus fire but hadn’t heard the correct story. So I was able to provide it to my audience first hand.

3. These Are A Few Of My Favorite Posts: I really enjoyed writing this last passion blog post because it was nice to look back at my old passion posts and see what I’ve written. This post showed me how my writing had improved from the beginning of the year up until now. Plus, I liked this post because it highlights my passion blog entirely and picked out my favorite blog posts that I wrote these past two semesters.

These are a few of my favorite posts

As this is my last passion post of the year, I will go through all of my posts throughout the year and pick out the countries or trips that stuck out to me the most; whether I had an amazing time there or thought it was a well written post. I know some of you have commented on these past posts so if you have something to say about either of these countries, I would love to hear it!

View of Dubai1. Dubai: Traveling to the U.A.E. (United Arab Emirates) was such a unique experience. Seeing a country develop so quickly from just desert to a major city in only several years was incredible. You can literally go to the beach, go shopping in the city, go dune-bashing in the desert, and even go skiing all in one day. If you have never been, I definitely recommend consider visiting here.

DSC_02452. Israel: I had to split this country up into two blog posts because of how much I had to say about it. This two month study abroad experience that I took my junior year of high school was one of the most incredible things I’ve ever done. Not only did it teach me to become more independent by being on my own but it showed me a whole new world outside of the United States. I had a bit of a culture shock my first week there as I had to adjust to the way of the Israelis but as time went by, I felt so comfortable there and didn’t want to leave. Even with all the news you hear today about what’s going on there, I definitely recommend giving this country a chance.

DSC_00813. England, the Netherlands, and Germany:This is another trip I had to split up into two blogs because of how amazing it was. This was the field hockey tour I took with some of my teammates where we traveled to these countries doing site seeing and playing field hockey with international players. It was a great opportunity for my team to play with these players who have held a field hockey stick ever since they were born because we got to learn so many new techniques that would benefit us in the coming season. It also gave us a chance to bond and become so much closer in foreign countries far away from home. We came back to the U.S. knowing so much about these countries and with a ton of new skills to use in our season!

IMG_45844. I-70: I label this post as an interstate because that is where the bus fire occurred. I’m not adding this to the list because it was a “good trip” but I thought that this was one of my best posts because of the story I was able to use. I thought it was ironic to be writing my passion blogs this semester on places I want to travel to and it just so happened that that day, all I wanted to travel to was back to Penn State safely. At the time, it didn’t really hit me that the whole situation was a big deal but in the end, it was! We literally could’ve died! Thankfully no one got hurt but I definitely had the opportunity to write a good blog post about it.

Well this wraps up my passion posts for the year. Hope you all enjoyed reading them!

Work In Progress: E-Portfolio

5. What sample work (from this class or other classes) do you plan to include in the e-portfolio? Why? What are you trying to portray about yourself by sharing this work? How will you introduce the work in order to present it to your audience?

I plan to post some passion blogs, my podcast, and advocacy project. I am still in the process of figuring out which other two assignments to post. I chose these because I think that they are some of my best work in I’ve done in this class and would like to showcase them on this portfolio. I want to show that my writing has improved throughout my passion blogs and show how much I love traveling. The podcast and advocacy project will show the range of assignments I’ve done these two semesters. I will have separate tabs for each assignment on the top of the webpage. Once you click on the assignment, I will introduce each piece with a little description on why I wrote about that and what it means to me. Sounds cheesy but I’ll figure it out haha

Help for my Cover Letter!

Hey guys! I’m having some second thoughts on whether or not I am doing this correctly and if I will be able to write a full page cover letter on my advocacy project… Let me know what you guys think!

Purpose: The purpose of this ad is to make my audience realize that cyber bullying is still going on especially with today’s advancement in technology and the increase in use of social media networks. It should also make the audience sympathize for victims of cyber bullying and wanting to do something about it.

Audience: The audience of this ad would be a person of any age who uses social media networks or has heard/been involved with a cyber bullying case. My Instagram and Twitter followers will also have the opportunity to view this ad and like, favorite, and retweet to spread awareness.

Medium and Context: A picture a created on Photoshop that is eye popping and will make the audience feel for the victims of cyber bullying. As I post it on Instagram and Twitter I hope to get my followers to acknowledge it and try to do something about it.

Strategies: I will be sticking to a black and white theme to give the effect off as depressing and harsh. The statistics will hopefully be eye opening to the viewers.

Effectiveness: Did my followers actually acknowledge my picture? Will they like it and possibly comment on it? Maybe even share it?

This is a very rough outline but will hopefully keep me on track as I write my cover letter!

Norway

The closest I’ve ever been to experiencing Norway is when I was at Epcot in Disney World and happened to visit the country there… lol They said some pretty interesting facts about Norway that I happened to recently be talking about with someone so I decided to blog about it! This country is full of culture and adventures to experience. Check out these places if you ever visit!

fjellnorwegen_ferienhausEastern Norway: This part of Norway holds their capital, Oslo. It is surrounded by forests but is one of the eastern parts of Norway where most of its population lives. Lillehammer, the Olympic city, is also located here. A very popular thing to do here is hiking. Because of it being so mountainous, you can do all sorts of activities including skiing or even river rafting.

reflection_1571152iNorthern Norway: Not going to lie, this seems like the coolest part. You can see the midnight sun as well as the northern lights! One of Norway’s largest educational and research center is found in Alta. One could also experience the wildlife safaris that let you see whales, eagles, sea birds, and king crabs!

Outdoor-art-in-Norway-Pla-014Central Norway: The first capital of Norway was Trondheim which was founded in 997. The Nidaros Cathedral is a site to visit because of the history it holds. In the city of Trondheim, this cathedral is where King Olav Haraldsen was buried. Another big thing to do here is to stay at a fishermen’s cabin by the coast where you can go fishing in the sea or in the many rivers for salmon!

cross-country-skii_1828425bOther activities to do: Besides hiking and skiing, Norwegians are big on fjord cruises which are cruises that take you along the fjord’s to give you a breathtaking view of Norway! A tourist should also walk along the Glaciers because apparently there are still glaciers from the last ice age!

Next time you plan on visiting a foreign country, consider Norway! Make sure to bundle up!

Civic Issues #4: The benefits of experiencing new cultures

As I wrote in my last post, every college student should consider studying abroad. Whether it be for 2 weeks or an entire semester, doing this would give the student a better opportunity to expose themselves to diversity. There are many benefits to studying in a different country including personal growth, intercultural benefits, and job opportunities.

According to the IES Abroad program, these benefits are what shape the student into becoming a better person. With personal growth, these students have the opportunity to live on their own and experience different ways of life all on their own. For some, that is a big step to take especially those who have never lived on their own before. Living with a family or staying with other students abroad are two different ways of trying to become more independent.

6a0128763842f6970c014e8ad08304970d-800wi-1Another benefit noted was being open to these new cultures. When living in another country, the student has an amazing opportunity to let go of their values from home and start living the way of the new country. They don’t have to do that but when studying in a foreign country, it would be understandable why someone would like to live in a certain way.

Living in another country can also open opportunities in the job market for students. When meeting new people and making connections with these people, a student could have chance at finding a new job. Also, having on your resume that you studied abroad is always a plus when at a job interview. It could give you a ton of things to talk about with the employer interviewing you.

study-abroadAccording to Princeton Review, the schools with the most students that study abroad are New York University, Michigan State University, University of Southern California, University of California-Los Angeles, University of Texas- Austin, and University of Washington. Princeton also points out that the major fields of study in which these students go abroad for are social science, business & management, humanities, fine or applied arts, physical or life sciences, and foreign languages. According to these statistics, how many of you are majoring in these fields? As this is my last Civic Issues blog post, I have to ask, will you study abroad? If so where and when?

Throughout out my Civic Issues posts, I have talked about diversity at Penn State, diversity at other college campuses, study abroad, and the benefits & reasons why to study abroad. Hopefully these posts have opened your mind on why it is important to be around diversity and how experiencing other cultures is a great thing to do. Whether it be on a college campus, or in another country, today’s society has grown immensely to accommodate the ones who want to experience such diversity.

WIP: Advocacy Project Ideas

1. Purpose: I will be creating a graphic design of a poster promoting to end cyber bullying. I plan to turn into you proof of the reaction my Facebook friends, Twitter followers, and Instagram followers get by taking screen shots of them. I’m trying to get people to understand that cyber bullying needs to stop and that something should be done about it. With my generation using the social media as much as they do, this should get the word out pretty smoothly and quickly.

2. Audience: My audience would be the people who are friends with me on Facebook, follow me on Twitter, or follow me on Instagram. Being that I am friends with people of all ages on Facebook and Twitter, I’m hoping that this will help spread more awareness through the social media.

3. Medium: I plan to design a poster PSA ad on photoshop and post it on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook to spread awareness about cyber bullying. My goal is to try to get as many likes, retweets, or favorites to remind people that cyber bullying may not be in the news everyday, but it is still going on. As cyber bullying occurs a lot on these social media networks, hopefully this will help get the word out.

4. Strategies: I will focus on Pathos and Logos. I hope to hit my audience with a strong emotion about cyber bullying and wanting to do something about it. I will also add facts to the ad to give them some logistics about this topic.

I plan to work on the ad a little bit everyday. I will use some of the facts I used in my Persuasive Essay to show the audience how cyber bullying affects our society today.

New Zealand

How many of you have been to New Zealand? I have not and thought that this was an interesting country to blog about. Especially from the looks of that picture I posted in my last blog post of the cave! It seems to be in interesting country full of adventures and many sites to see! Here are some activities or locations tourists can check out!

new-zealand-skiingSkiing: New Zealand is known to have great skiing conditions! You can go skiing at Christchurch-Canterbury, Mount Cook Mackenzie, and Queenstown-Wanaka. The slops range from beginners to advance skier slopes.

great-topperSports: There are a ton of sports one could partake in or watch including Rugby, Mountain Biking, Cycling, and Golf. The scenic views when cycling are said to be incredible as well as Mountain Biking in spots like Tongariro National Park

urlNature and Wildlife: There are so many fascinating creatures you could visit including Whale watching, Dolphins, Horse riding, and Penguins. You can also visit the volcanic and geothermal siteswhere you could hike around the volcanoes and check out the boiling mud pools.

Backpacking: This is a big activity to do in New Zealand if you really want to experience their nature and culture the right way. You can hike on many tracks and trails while running into the locals who are just as friendly! There are many programs you can do to be able to experience this the proper way!

6-scenic-wonders-of-new-zealand-1Other activities: Other activities you could do in New Zealand are shopping, visit theme parks, gamble a bit at the casinos, or relax after a long day of hiking at the hot pools. According to the website 100% Pure New Zealand, “New Zealand is located where two tectonic plates of the earth’s crust meet. This causes a large amount of geothermal activity, allowing warm water to bubble up through the earth’s crust to form hot pools. These pools often contain minerals dissolved from the rocks they seeped through.” Pretty cool, huh?

So why not give New Zealand a chance when looking for somewhere to travel? Seems like an endless amount of fun, if you ask me! If any of you have traveled here or are interested in traveling here one day, I would love to hear your thoughts!
