Mirror Mirror on the Wall…

Have you ever rolled out of bed and been terrified by your appearance as you catch  a glimpse of yourself in the mirror? Perhaps this has not happened in a while, considering dorms lack proper reflective surfaces. Who wants to walk out into the hallway each time they are curious about how they look? I know that this comes across slightly girly and frivolous; however, living in a room with one mirror that is too high for a short person to see very well, is extremely difficult. Each day in high school I looked at multiple mirrors as I got myself ready for school in the morning. First I would use a small vanity mirror as I put on my makeup. Next I would walk over to my full-length mirror to check out what I was wearing for the day. As I walked out the door, I would glance at the mirror in my living room to make sure I did not have remnants of breakfast or toothpaste on my face as I left for the day. Not having mirrors around is a major adjustment.

Don’t let this worry you though, because putting mirrors up in your room is an extremely easy way to make your dorm feel more like your bedroom or house back home. The best place I have found for purchasing mirrors has been Target, they seem to have everything I need! My roommate and I, after living without for three weeks, went on a trip to Target in search of mirrors. We both came back with a small vanity mirror as well as a full-length mirror to share. After leaving Target and spending less than thirty dollars each, we were quite satisfied. The difference these accessories made was tremendous! If the idea of having multiple surfaces to look at yourself in does not sound appealing, think about this. Mirrors make a space or room appear larger than it really is. Suddenly, two of the four walls in room have added depth! Even small mirrors contribute to this effect. One does not need massive mirrors that cost a lot and take up entire walls. The small vanity mirrors we purchased did the trick! All it took was the addition of a few mirrors to transform a dorm into a more dynamic space and comfortable home.

I definitely agree with you about the lack of mirrors in the dorm room. I brought one small one but my roommate and I were thinking about getting a full-length one. Even though we live next to the bathroom, it’s still a big hassle to go back and forth! It’s good to know that Target has good mirrors for a good price.

My roommate and I did the same thing! It might sound like a vain thing to admit, but everyone (girls especially) checks the mirror at least twice before going out into public. Mirrors are an important thing to have in the dorm room, and you’re right – they can help make it feel more home-y.

I’ve also been somewhat bothered by the lack of mirrors in my dorm room. However, I don’t worry about my appearance that much (I suppose it’s just a guy thing). It does, though, get somewhat annoying when I have to walk over to the one corner of my room just to see if the clothes I’m wearing actually match to some extent. I’d have to agree that adding mirrors can make the place feel more like home. I put a carpet in my room so my dorm room could mimic my actual bedroom more.

I totally agree with your ideas about the mirrors. I have 5 roommates and all we have is one mirror on the back of a door. Unfortunately I end up going back and forth between my room and the bathroom about one hundred times every morning before I leave for class. My roommates and I definitely need to make a trip to Target to invest in some mirrors!
