What’s That Called?

starbucks menue

Throughout high school, I took a Saturday morning ballet class. Before I had my driver’s license, my mom would drive me to the dance studio every Saturday. Each Saturday morning I would beg my mom to stop at Starbucks on the way. Most weeks she agreed, as long as I would go in and order for us. To this day, my mom avoids ordering at Starbucks, always making me do it for her. Although it may sound silly, a lot of people are intimidated by the ordering system at Starbucks. When ordering, there are certain terms to use that pertain only to Starbucks. Yes, someone could just ask for a medium coffee, but the majority of those in line behind them would notice. Going to Starbucks is partially about the experience, and a large part of the experience is figuring out how to order in the correct, Starbucks, manner. Here are a few tips about how to place your order. When telling your barista what size drink you would like, you are not to ask for a small, medium, or large. Instead ask for a tall, grande, or venti. A tall drink is a small drink, a grande a medium, and a venti a large. Once you get used to ordering using the correct terms for each size, the rest is easy. Many drinks are made with milk, and by default Starbucks uses 2% milk. If you prefer your drink be made with skim milk, merely say skinny before the name of your drink. If you’d like soy milk, say soy before you place your order. Another area where some have trouble is when asking for extra shots of espresso in their drinks. This is much easier than I thought it was at the beginning. Merely ask for a single (one shot), double (two shots), triple (three shots), or quad (four shots). These are some basic tips that come in handy when placing your order at Starbucks. When I first began trying new drinks and visiting the coffeehouses more often, it took me a long time to be comfortable ordering; however, after becoming a frequent customer, I know exactly what a triple grande skinny vanilla latte is and have no trouble ordering! Next time you stop by Starbucks, try customizing your drink with some of these terms! Until next week, happy tasting!

Starbucks is terrifying. Sometimes I even feel afraid asking for a muffin… Like, do they have skinny muffins? Venti muffins? Is it against Starbucks etiquette to order a muffin without coffee? Anytime I go to Starbucks, I feel like a fraud. Your post gives me comfort and the confidence to maybe one day possibly order a drink with my muffin. Thank you πŸ™‚

Oh my gosh, I had no idea the ordering process at Starbucks was so intricate! I’ve been there twice in my life, and both times I ordered the “wrong” way. I’m pretty sure I just asked for a medium latte or something very basic, haha. The last time I ordered was at the Starbucks in Times Square, NYC. I’m sure I got quite a few quizzical looks. Thank you for this guide. If I ever go to Starbucks again, I’ll now know the correct way to order!

I don’t think I ever realized that those fancy names that people throw out when they order their drinks actually mean something relatively normal. I think that I’m definitely going to start using “skinny” more often now that I know what it actually means as opposed to just guessing that somehow they made the drink less unhealthily. I’m definitely going to try this out sometime soon (and probably make a fool out of myself) so that I can start ordering what I REALLY want.

When I first started going to Starbucks I was so afraid that I was going to say something wrong. But it really is a process that you have to get used to! I feel like they almost need to release a guide on how to order, but I guess most people figure out in the long run!

this week was not the first time i had ever ordered a ‘skinny’ drink, but now i am using the ordering system to my advantage. i agree with you that there’s definitely a starbucks experience, which is a really good business model because it’s very much like membership in that more experiences you have ordering (and giving starbucks your money) you become more familiar with how everything works, and earn points on your gold card so you can spend more money on starbucks (with the occasional free drink) πŸ™‚
