Sea Turtle Conservation

I am almost 100% certain that I am going to go with the topic of sea turtle conservation for my persuasive essay. This is something I have been passionate about since I was a little kid. The main reason why I feel this is an important topic, is because humans have a large impact on the lives of sea turtles. So many actions humans take can cost sea turtles their lives. One of these is by enjoying large beach front houses. Sea turtles up and down the east coast come onto shore to lay their eggs. They come onto the land to lay their eggs, and then make their way back to the sea, leaving their eggs to hatch at a later date. Once the eggs begin to hatch, the baby sea turtles begin their journey back to the ocean. This is a process that has been happening for years, but humans are having negative impacts on the turtles. When vacationers leave the lights on in their beach houses at night, the sea turtles ashore to lay their eggs, or those headed to the ocean, become disoriented, confusing the lights with the moon. This can even cause sea turtles to become stranded, preventing them from laying eggs or even returning to the sea at all. This is only one human impact I plan on exploring in my persuasive essay. The goal of my essay will be to make the public aware of the unintentional impact they may have on innocent creatures. I feel as if this is a perfect time of year to explore this topic, as summer is right around the corner. Soon families will be planning vacations, and heading to the beach. Hopefully the information I present to my audience with will stick with them as they enjoy the summer holiday.

I actually really love your idea! It is similar to my topic: arguing against the use of animals for entertainment. I am focusing on zoos, circuses, and rodeos, and I think these things are similar to the conservation of sea turtles. People do not realize how their actions negatively affect sea turtles just as they do not realize that by going to zoos, circuses, and rodeos they are indirectly supporting the abuse of animal rights. I don’t really have any ideas for my advocacy project yet, but if you wanted to connect our projects in any way I think it could be really effective!

This made me think of the line from Spider-Man, “With great power comes great responsibility.” As humans, we can do so much to improve the lives of these mostly helpless animals. I think you have a great topic and you can do a lot to inform humans of their harmful actions and persuade them to change their ways. I’m looking forward to seeing where you go with this; I think it will definitely apply to me since I love visiting the beach!
