Genetically Modified Organisms

The common person may know of genetic engineering in the case of genetically modified organisms (GMOs.) GMOs most often refer to foods grown or raised that enhances or adds to the organism. These foods are modified to withstand diseases, natural disasters and to increase crop yield. These modifications can include the addition, deletion, or mutation of DNA within the organism (Goldbas). Some successful attempts have led to increased protein in white corn (the most common food eaten in tropical Africa), allergy-free milk and a new breed of salmon that can grow in half the time and twice the size of most salmon eaten today (Goldbas).
