Case Study
You are a PhD student responsible for 20 undergraduates who are working on a social venture in India. You arrive in the small town of Rampur to negotiate entry into the community and figure out logistics two weeks before the students are scheduled to arrive there. A room has been reserved for you at Hotel Excellent by your Indian partner Lalu Yadav. You plan to stay at the hotel for three days before traveling to other small towns where your students will be working periodically throughout their trip. After settling into your room, you spend six hours negotiating the terms of the students’ stay with the hotel manager. A major negotiation item is the upgrades that need to be done in each room by the hotel staff to make the student’s four-week stay comfortable. The hotel manager, Samir, is a well-respected and prominent member in the community, as well as a sharp businessman. On the last day of your stay, you are presented with a bill for Rs. 3,000. The receptionist insists that the room you were allotted was a double room for which the daily rate is Rs. 1,000, as opposed to the single room rate of Rs. 500. You are surprised because while the room had an additional bed, you had not asked for it. The hotel is completely vacant and they could have allotted you a single room! After some debate, the receptionist admits that she was asked by her boss, Samir, to charge you Rs. 1,000 per day. When you speak to Samir, he insists that you are being charged the correct amount for the double room. He also insists that Lalu had booked a double room for you and he is simply following instructions. You excuse yourself to the bathroom and call Lalu, who is astonished that Samir is overcharging you but confirms that he had reserved a single room for you and the quoted price was Rs. 450. How do you proceed?
Points to Ponder
- Did you encounter any scenarios of racism during your trip? Sexism?
- In what ways did your race benefit your venture or experience abroad? Hinder it?
