Updates on ESM GSO Activities

Hey all,

Just a few reminders.

Next week our last Diversity in Science brown bag lunch will feature our own department head, Mike Messina, talking with us about the current and future diversity in the department. Please join us November 7th from 11:30am-1pm.

Please attend our Fifth Annual ESM GSO Chili Cookoff on November 8th, 11am-1pm. The Chili Cookoff is one of the events that raises the most money that the GSO uses for all other fun activities provided throughout the year. If you would like to submit a dish, please email for more details.

Lastly, the monthly ESM Happy Hour for November has been moved to November 9th. We will be meeting at Liberty Craft House. More details TBD!

Fifth Annual Chili Cookoff

Hello everyone!

It’s time for the annual ESM Chili Cookoff! This event is one of the largest fundraising opportunities for the ESM GSO. We spend almost $2,000 each year planning fun activities for staff, faculty, and graduate students so we look forward to having another great event this year.

The Chili Cookoff will be Wednesday, November 8th from 11-1 in 217 FRB.

Please consider entering your award winning recipe into the cook-off! You get FREE taste testing when you enter a dish- in case you needed an incentive! Faculty, staff, and grad students are all encouraged to submit a chili entry. The more entries, the better! Please let us know by next Wednesday (November 1st) if you’d be willing to enter a dish!

There will me a monetary prize and bragging rights for the two top entries. This is also a great event to socialize and take a break from the busy semester.

Please see the attached flyer for further details.

Looking forward to some delicious competition!

Sexual Assault and Bystander Awareness Training

Hello faculty, staff, associates, and graduate students,

For our next meeting in the Diversity in Science brown bag lunch series, Stand for State will provide a free training for the ESM department concerning Sexual Assault and Bystander Awareness. This 90-minute training will focus on teaching how to identify warning signs of sexual assault and harassment, intervene in concerning situations, and help create a safer atmosphere for the Penn State community.
All faculty, staff, and graduate students are invited to join us Friday, October 20th from 12:30-2pm in FRB 217. Light snacks will be provided. Email me or the ESM GSO with any questions you may have.

Jobs Outside Academia

Hello everyone!
Curtis Dell from USDA-ARS will be joining us Tuesday, October 3rd from 11:30-12:30 in FRB 217 to discuss job opportunities outside of academia! Curt will be discussing his experiences after graduate school, as well as what type of opportunities are available with ARS.
We look forward to seeing you all there!

ESM Bocce Ball Tournament!

Back by popular demand, the 2nd Not-So-Annual ESM GSO Bocce Ball tournament will be Friday, September 15th on the lawn in front of FRB from 1230-130. Never heard of bocce ball?  Don’t know how to play? No worries, it takes 1 minute to learn! Bring your lunch and come enjoy some friendly competition.

Please respond with the following by next Friday, September 8:

1) If you would like to participate (If yes, note whether you are grad student, faculty, or staff)

2) If you have a bocce ball set you are willing to lend for the tournament

Also, please send this to research assistants and technicians who may not receive these emails.

Can’t wait!

ESM Fall Picnic- Rescheduled Date!

Hi all!
Thanks for your patience with the scheduling shenanigans. Our fall picnic will be Tuesday, August 29th from 5:00 – 8:00 PM at Sunset Park.  All faculty, staff, graduate students, and their families are invited. It is a potluck style so please bring a side dish or dessert to share! The GSO will provide burgers/hotdogs/veggie burgers as well as beverages, games, and activities. There will also be a chance for one lucky graduate student, one lucky staff, and one lucky faculty to win a gift card to the creamery.
See you all there!
