Start the semester with Happy Hour!

We hope you’ve all had a wonderful break! To start the semester off right, we are having a happy hour this Thursday (1/11) at 5pm at Local Whiskey. Please join us to catch up after winter break and welcome our new GSO officers!

More plans for the semester TBD!

Last ESM GSO Happy Hour of the Semester!

Hi everyone,

December’s Happy Hour will be at 5:00pm, this Thursday, December 7th at the Federal Taphouse. Let’s celebrate the end of the semester!

Mark your calendar and hope to see everyone there!

Updates on ESM GSO Activities

Hey all,

Just a few reminders.

Next week our last Diversity in Science brown bag lunch will feature our own department head, Mike Messina, talking with us about the current and future diversity in the department. Please join us November 7th from 11:30am-1pm.

Please attend our Fifth Annual ESM GSO Chili Cookoff on November 8th, 11am-1pm. The Chili Cookoff is one of the events that raises the most money that the GSO uses for all other fun activities provided throughout the year. If you would like to submit a dish, please email ecosystem.gso@gmail.com for more details.

Lastly, the monthly ESM Happy Hour for November has been moved to November 9th. We will be meeting at Liberty Craft House. More details TBD!

Fifth Annual Chili Cookoff

Hello everyone!

It’s time for the annual ESM Chili Cookoff! This event is one of the largest fundraising opportunities for the ESM GSO. We spend almost $2,000 each year planning fun activities for staff, faculty, and graduate students so we look forward to having another great event this year.

The Chili Cookoff will be Wednesday, November 8th from 11-1 in 217 FRB.

Please consider entering your award winning recipe into the cook-off! You get FREE taste testing when you enter a dish- in case you needed an incentive! Faculty, staff, and grad students are all encouraged to submit a chili entry. The more entries, the better! Please let us know by next Wednesday (November 1st) if you’d be willing to enter a dish!

There will me a monetary prize and bragging rights for the two top entries. This is also a great event to socialize and take a break from the busy semester.

Please see the attached flyer for further details.

Looking forward to some delicious competition!

ESM Bocce Ball Tournament!

Back by popular demand, the 2nd Not-So-Annual ESM GSO Bocce Ball tournament will be Friday, September 15th on the lawn in front of FRB from 1230-130. Never heard of bocce ball?  Don’t know how to play? No worries, it takes 1 minute to learn! Bring your lunch and come enjoy some friendly competition.

Please respond with the following by next Friday, September 8:

1) If you would like to participate (If yes, note whether you are grad student, faculty, or staff)

2) If you have a bocce ball set you are willing to lend for the tournament

Also, please send this to research assistants and technicians who may not receive these emails.

Can’t wait!

Spring 2017 Updates

Hello everyone!

Some upcoming events to keep in mind this semester:

Coffee Hour will be weekly on Thursdays  from 10-11am starting this week (Jan. 26th). We will again alternate between the Forest Resources Building (FRB; room TBD) and the Ag Sciences and Industries Building (ASI; room TBD). Come enjoy some caffeinated beverages and snacks with other grad students, faculty, and staff!

Happy Hour is back and will be held monthly on the first Thursday of each month (note, February’s date is not the first Thursday). Make sure to save the upcoming dates on your calendar and keep an eye out for future times and details!

Feb-9th: Local Whiskey
Mar-2nd: Rathskeller CANCELLED> rescheduled to Spring Break
Apr-6th: Otto’s
May-4th: Z-Bar

Other upcoming exciting events include the spring crockpot cook-off, a departmental picnic, and more! Stay tuned to this website, our Facebook group, or your email for more details!

And, as a reminder, come to the ESM GSO general body meeting tomorrow (Wed, Jan. 25th from 3:30-4:30pm in FRB 105) to discuss what you’d additionally like to see happen this semester.

First General Body Meeting and Happy Hour

We will be hosting our first general body meeting on Thursday, September 8th from 4-5pm in FRB 217 (snacks provided!). The first half of the meeting will be discussing various initiatives and events planned for the semester. This is a great time to learn more about what’s going on in the department and to give input about what sort of events/resources you would like the GSO to pursue.

For the second half of the meeting, representatives from the Coalition of Graduate Employees (CGE) will be presenting the hows and whys of the unionization push and will host a Q&A. This will be a great opportunity to ask questions and to clear up any misunderstandings about what the union might mean for you.

Following the general body meeting, we have the first Happy Hour of the semester at Local Whiskey. Come unwind and spend time with colleagues old and new!

Hope to see you there!

Welcome to Fall 2016!

The Fall semester is nearly upon is, and the Graduate Student Organization already has some big plans for the semester!

Coffee Hour will start up again on Tuesday, Aug. 23rd from 10-11am in 231 FRB. This is a reoccurring weekly event allowing us to come together, enjoy some caffeine and goodies, and catch up with our fellow graduate students and engage the faculty. Just as we did previously, coffee hour will alternate weekly between FRB (room TBD each week) and 405 ASI.

Happy Hour will be returning as well, two times each month! The first will be the first Thursday of every month (note: except the first, see schedule change below) from 4-5pm at locations TBD. The second will be later in the month and also a little later in the evening (~6pm). We plan to do some more interdepartmental evenings, so let us know if you have any suggestions.

We also have a general body meeting for all ESM graduate students scheduled Thursday, September 8th in 217 FRB from 4-5pm followed by our first Happy Hour of the semester from 5-6pm. We’ll be discussing the GSO’s plans for the semester and more exciting events to come, so make sure to join us. Details TBD as we get closer, so make sure to check back!

Need some additional events to keep you happy with the semester starting? The Chili Cook-off will be returning by popular demand November 15th from 11:30am-1:30pm (in 217 FRB) along with some additional exciting events currently in the works!

Weekly emails will be sent out to remind everyone of all of these upcoming events.

Happy Fall 2016!

Consider Yourself Rural Socialized

Thank you to the Rural Sociology department for joining us at Kildaire’s for happy hour. There was a great turnout from both departments. Hopefully you had a chance to meet some new folks and catch up. If you were not able to make it, we hope to see you at our next happy hour, May 7th, with the Geosciences department.

Thanks for Joining Us, Entomology

Last night, we had the first interdepartmental happy hour of the semester. Entomology joined us at Darkhorse Tavern, and it was a great success. We had over 20 people show up! Missed the fun? Be sure to join us on April 2nd for our happy hour with Rural Sociology.

Cheers, and have a great spring break!
