The “Apology” is all about Socrates defending himself in court for corrupting the youth and professing false gods. He tries the entire time to defend himself talking to Meletus and trying to discredit him, but it never works. He is sentenced to death although he is alright with it since he believes he lived his life the right way. I found that the “Apology” was written in 360BC but the trial was in 399BC. This is 29 years apart so it is possible there may be a few differences from when it happened to when Plato wrote it. In the end even though Socrates tried to discredit Meletus, it did not work. The jury did not believe in the wisdom of socrates and he was forced to drink Hemlock.

(sorry about it being two comments, it didnt paste over all the way) He criticizes Meletus and embarrasses him in front of the court. Socrates is found guilty only by a few votes and suggests he pay a fine. His motion is denied and he’s sentenced to death.

So Socrates is giving his speech at the trial he was summoned to for corrupting the youth of Athens. Even though his life is at risk he keeps cool and defends his acts and beliefs. He exposes Athenian society’s wise men as arrogant, and falsely wise and that instead they are ignorant. The youth of Athens appreciates Socrates and his work but the elder’s resent him for challenging all that they claim to know.
