Journal Entry (4): ‘What I learned from my Classmates’
    July 8, 2013
Over the past two weeks I have been thrust into the presence of people I have never met before. It took me a while to open myself up to getting to know everyone in my LEAP group, and I still do not know too much about everyone. I have learned enough about my classmates, though, to know that they are a group of hard-working determined individuals, who aspire to be the best they can be and to set themselves apart from the rest. As we can see from the videos, everyone added his or her own flare to the video he or she created. Whether the videos were essentially the same in terms of production or not, not one video was the same. Every single video was made in a way that set it apart from the rest. Not one person wanted to make a video that just barely satisfied the criteria. Thus, everyone attempted and succeeded in making a video that was creative in his or her own way. Another thing I learned about my classmates from the videos is that just about everyone acknowledges happiness as the one thing people desire most in life. This reflects all of the differences between the members of our class. We all have different interests and hobbies that make us happy. Some people like going to the gym, some people like sports, some people like video games, some people like sitting down to a good book, some people like just hanging out, and some people like just relaxing all day. Hometowns also create individualism in all of us. Most of us are from Pennsylvania so the real rivalry is between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, but some people are from other states with California being the furthest from campus. These things show that every single one of us is an individual just like the videos showed too. On the other hand, I have learned that as a whole my classmates and I enjoy many of the same things too. We all enjoy getting a day of class off (thus, we all enjoy Dr. Fisher), we all enjoy sleeping in, we all enjoy having fun on the weekends (some a little more than others), and we all enjoy State College. The greatest thing I have learned about my classmates is that no matter what our hobbies are, where we are from, what our beliefs are, or what we look like, we all take pride in being Penn State students, and this one thing binds us all and connects us in one, singular way.

After watching most of the videos, it is clear that I have much to learn from my classmates. That is the great thing about going through the leap program. The more time I have with my classmates, the more I learn from them and vice versa. Like we talk about in class, everyone has their own opinion and not one is technically right. One thing it seems that we all agreed upon was that much has changed in college since the 80’s. Obviously everybody mentioned that technology was the major change from the 80’s to present day. Some others mentioned how morals have changed, but not necessarily changed in a bad way. Some of us agreed that although our morals have changed, its just a thing that happens over time from generation to generation. Like we talked about today in class, some people think that our generation is in shambles, but others believe that we are just following a common reoccurring theme. If I am speaking for my classmates as a whole, then I would have to say that most of us think that our morals are just changing, but not for the worse. Things change, objects and possessions fall in and out of popularity, but it all just depends what that generations thing is that they do. For our generation, we rely heavily on technology but no one can really be at fault for that, its just the way we grew up. Maybe because we are all so technologically acquainted, that is the reason that some of our morals are changing. Overall, the videos my classmates presented gave me much to ponder. I think we all have great ideas, but we all can agree that there is significant change from the college lifestyle of the 80’s compared to now.

My classmates, first off, are a great bunch of people. It’s pretty amazing to see people from all of these different backgrounds come together like this and make these 6 weeks so enjoyable. I never saw this coming. It kind of ties into peoples morals and values that we all have been talking about. Today in class we discussed how it does not matter where you are from, it just matters what your morals are. And I must say, after watching these videos, our class has some great morals and values. It just goes to show how dedicated we all are to our future. I, for one, have never had to do something of this nature for any class…even in high school. So, at first, I was rather nervous. But after seeing everyones great ideas put together like this, it made me realize why you wanted us to do this and how great of an idea it was. I especially agree with my classmates on what has changed since you were in school. All of those responses were a joy to hear. This class is unlike any other class I have taken, and I am glad I got the opportunity to take it. My thinking has been expanded to new heights and levels I didnt know were possible. My classmates have taught me that we are all after the same thing: success and happiness. And in order for that to happen, its gonna take a bit of work. But besides the point, we have a great group of college students here that I am going to take advantage of.

What I Learned From My Classmates
I want to start by saying how much fun and how interesting everyone is in our class. We groupMe all day long and are there for each other when we need some help. I think the biggest thing I got from watching all of these videos is how much the world has changed. Literally every aspect of life has changed in the past 30 years or so. We have infinite amounts of information at our fingertips virtually anywhere and anytime we want it. I can sit comfortably on my bed and see what’s happening in the Middle East, while tweeting about British music stars, in America. We are forever connected to [most] people everywhere. But technology isn’t the only thing that’s changed; I think people have generally changed. Many kids today think about what they don’t have, and completely take for granted all the other unnecessary things they do have. You see, what we have isn’t good enough. We constantly want more. Now, there are a lot of people who would say our constant need for more is a bad thing, but I see it as a messed up sense of determination. If I want money, I can get it. If I want information, I’ll get that too. If I want to have fun, I know where the good times are. In this day and age, if you apply yourself right, you can and WILL have whatever your heart desires. I heard someone say once that the sky is the limit, and I know that’s ridiculous. Let’s all shoot for the stars and leave these gray skies behind.
