We’ve been imaging exemplars from our amazing sucking lice (Anoplura) collection—one of the two or three largest collections in the world, in fact—and it seems like we should do something fun with them … right here on the curators’ blog. I was thinking about a “lousy Monday” series, but I don’t want to perpetuate the poor perception people have of these fascinating insects (people hate Mondays, “lousy” has negative connotations, yada yada yada). So how about a Friday Night Lice series?
I know it’s not Friday, but it is Taxonomist Appreciation Day. It’s fair to say our current knowledge of sucking lice taxonomy would be much more incomplete without the efforts of my predecessor here at the Frost Entomological Museum, taxonomist extraordinaire K. C. Kim. So in honor of this special day and of K.C.’s legacy (and those efforts of his collaborators) we bring you the first installment of this series … on a Wednesday.
So, what is this species? And what mammal does it live on (and bite)? We’ll post the answer later tonight!
