While we at the Frost hope you enjoyed your respective feast, we also hope you are thankful for not being feasted upon. In honor of what you probably ate yesterday, this week’s lice were found on a distant relative of what was on your plate. Yes, these lice had an avian host, and they are of the Amblycera suborder.
These specimens were found on a Cathartes aura septentionalis in Nacoqdoches, Texas in March 1953. They bear a striking resemblance to Meleagris gallopavo, which is commonly eaten over the Thanksgiving holiday.
Well enough of the birds. Here are this week’s mystery lice. They are the same species, so please comment if you know what they are!
