Last Friday I shared this specimen from our Anoplura collection.
This louse is a Neohaematopinus echinatus (Neumann, 1909) (Anoplura: Polyplacidae). This species’ main defining feature is in the sphericity of the lobe of its second sternite, which has several setae on each end (Pratt and Stojanovich 1961).
This particular louse was collected on a Funambulus pennanti (Rodentia: Sciuridae). These northern palm squirrels, also known as five-striped squirrels, are extremely common in southern and southeastern Asia.
Please join us next week for a new specimen on Friday Night Lice!
