TYPES OF FUNDING

ACADEMIC YEAR FELLOWSHIPS: These awards support your academic training, not a particular research project per se. 

SCHOLARSHIPS: Cash awards for students at any stage of graduate work.

PRE-DISSERTATION: These awards support fieldwork and language training for students before dissertation work. Includes Master’s students.

FIELDWORK AWARDS: These awards support fieldwork (mostly for dissertation). They usually require that you have completed all program requirements with the exception of your dissertation (ABD or all-but-dissertation status).

WRITING FELLOWSHIPS: Writing fellowships offer financial support while you are writing your dissertation so that you do not have to teach and can focus on your work.

DEPARTMENTAL FUNDS: Awards, grants, and fellowships from the Dept. of Geography can be applied to costs of fieldwork or travel.

AAG AWARDS AND GRANTS: Various opportunities for funding exist through the American Association of Geography Specialty Groups.

CONFERENCE: Fund conference travel.

 

ACADEMIC YEAR FELLOWSHIPS

 

AMERICAN BAR FOUNDATION FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

BASIC INFO: Supports graduate training of students enrolled in PhD program in social sciences with focus on law and/or inequity.

AWARD DETAILS: $30,000 stipend and $1,500 research allowance per year.

DURATION: Up to two years.

ELIGIBILITY: Must be in third, fourth, or fifth year of graduate program and U.S. citizen or permanent resident.

FORD FOUNDATION PRE-DISSERTATION FELLOWSHIP

BASIC INFO: Supports graduate training of students enrolled in PhD program.

AWARD DETAILS: Annual stipend of $24,000.

DURATION: Three years.

ELIGIBILITY: U.S. citizen.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE AND AREA STUDIES GRADUATE ACADEMIC YEAR FELLOWSHIP

BASIC INFO: FLAS funds your academic training in less commonly taught languages and area studies. Awardees must take four approved courses (two language and two area studies) during the award year.

AWARD DETAILS: Offers tuition waiver and $15,000 stipend. However, tuition waiver is not sufficient for graduate students, so awardees generally only accept the stipend and accept a TA/RA from the geography department.

DURATION: 2 semesters.

TIME TO APPLY: Winter (February).

ELIGIBILITY: Awardee must be studying or proposing to study approved language and area studies focus. U.S. citizens.

NASA EARTH AND SPACE SCIENCE FELLOWSHIP

 BASIC INFO: Must address one of the following topics: Earth Science, Heliophysics, Planetary Science, Astrophysics.

AWARD DETAILS: Up to 45,000 (depends on award).

DURATION: One year.

TIME TO APPLY: Winter (February).

ELIGIBILITY: Can be Masters or PhD student at any point in their program. No citizenship requirement specified.

NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION GRADUATE RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

BASIC INFO: The NSF GRFP supports graduate academic training for three years. While you do have to propose your research agenda, it is geared toward enabling your academic training as a whole.

AWARD DETAILS: Covers three years of tuition and provides yearly stipend of around $34,000 for three years (over 12 months).

DURATION: 3 years.

TIME TO APPLY: Fall.

ELIGIBILITY: Must be pursuing PhD. You can only apply once, and specific eligibility criteria apply relating to how long you have been in graduate school. U.S. citizens.

NOTRE DAME INSTITUTE FOR ADVANCED STUDY

 BASIC INFO: NDIAS is dedicated to fostering and supporting integrative scholarship addressing ultimate questions at the intersection of the arts, engineering, humanities, law, and formal, natural, and social sciences, especially those that transcend disciplinary boundaries.

AWARD DETAILS: Graduate fellowships range up to a maximum of $25,000 (gross amount) and include a $1,000 research account, office facilities in the Institute, a computer and printer, access to University libraries and other facilities, and twice-weekly Institute seminars and other events.

DURATION: 12 months.

TIME TO APPLY: Fall (October).

ZEIT STIFTUNG TRAJECTORIES OF CHANGE PHD SCHOLARSHIP

BASIC INFO: Funds PhD research concerned with themes of social and political change in Eastern Europe, North Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia. Thematic focus changes annually.

AWARD DETAILS: Monthly stipend of 1,200 Euros. Additional funds for conference travel.

DURATION: Up to three years.

EVELYN L. PRUITT NATIONAL MINORITY FELLOWSHIP

BASIC INFO: Supports academic training of minority women enrolled in Master’s program in geography or related field.

AWARD DETAILS: Up to $4,000 to supplement other forms of financial support. Cannot be applied to tuition or fees (budget required).

DURATION: One-time award.

TIME TO APPLY: Spring (March).

ELIGIBILITY: Open to women who are members of a minority group: Hispanic, Black or African-American, American Indian or Alaska Native, Asian and Pacific Islander or Hawaiian Native, First Nations. Citizens of U.S. and Canada.

HISPANIC SCHOLARSHIP FUND

BASIC INFO: These scholarships are designed to assist students of Hispanic heritage obtain a college degree. All majors and graduate fields are accepted, with an emphasis on STEM majors.

AWARD DETAILS: One-time award of $500 – $5,000, depending on need.

BASIC INFO: FLAS Summer Graduate Fellowships support language training in less commonly taught languages.

AWARD DETAILS: Award includes up to $5,000 tuition for approved language course and $2,500 stipend.

WOODROW WILSON DISSERTATION FELLOWSHIP IN WOMEN’S STUDIES

BASIC INFO: The Woodrow Wilson Dissertation Fellowships in Women’s Studies support the final year of dissertation writing for PhD. candidates in the humanities and social sciences whose work addresses topics of women and gender in interdisciplinary and original ways.

AWARD DETAILS: $5,000 to be used for expenses connected with completing their dissertations, such as research-related travel, data work/collection, and supplies.

AAG AWARDS AND GRANTS

 

Each year, before the annual meeting of the American Association of Geographers, various Specialty Groups offer travel funds, proposal competitions, and other awards. Specialty Groups are organizations within the AAG that focus on geographic themes or regions of study (e.g., Development Geographies, Space and Sexuality, Political Geography, Latin American Geography, etc.). You can join these groups for a low annual cost (usually $2-7). As a member you will receive notices on the Specialty Group listserv concerning essay competitions, proposal competitions, and travel grants to attend the AAG annual meeting. Awards are usually small ($400-1000 for proposals, smaller prizes for papers and travel grants), but can be put toward research expenses.
