Silence in the Dark

by Bret Olson

The clouds high above cast a shadow over earth’s surface and dim the hills. Far beyond the pines over the mountains edge mankind is thought to be extinct. Earth’s eye falls asleep for the rest of the night. The night of the forest slowly becomes awake. The birds have stopped chirping, the squirell roam their homes one last time before going to bed. The hollow sound of the forest is taken over by the flow of the stream that ravishes the hills. The quiet eardrum echoes from the beetles and owl. As the night gets older the temperature drops, bringing chills as each hour passes. Without earth’s eye nothing is visible. The canopy high above becomes a barrier to the moons dim light. Night passes by, earth’s eye begins to peak its eyelid open, and night becomes visible again. The blindness of the night turns right back into the day.Animals begin to come awake once again and meander through the hills of their empire. I begin my new day as the bark of a sugar maple
tree lays upon my back and i face the fierce flames of the fire. I sit on a wool blanket and become one with the natural world. A buzzing noise at my ear turns into a small yellow jacket traveling along his day. The wind blows softly as leaves turn over and the the branches swat from natures voice. The smoke from the fire rises and the soft breeze creates a miniature tornado of smoke as if all of natures creations are around. Natures realms are taking place in different forms. The sun sends streaming beams of life and light to the earths floor; it shines through the thick canopy reopening the denseĀ  woods for clarity.
