A summer internship could really jump start your career, no matter what your major.
Although many employers have already selected their summer interns, numerous opportunities are still posted on Penn State’s job board, the Nittany Lion Career Network and continue to be posted by employers.
Students can use the NLCN board to search for these opportunities in various ways– by doing a keyword search using their major, or by the job function they want to do, or the industry in which they want to work, for example. Each of these searches will provide a different set of results that should include positions that meet your internship goals. Then it is a question of following the “How to Apply” instructions, to get your resume in front of them, and following up to ensure you are being considered.
And if you can’t find an existing internship opportunity that seems like a good match, consider designing your own. By that we mean: reach out and contact the companies you are interested in, and sell them on the idea of having you as their summer intern.
In either case, be sure you have a top-notch resume prepared that showcases your skills and accomplishments, and a cover letter that explains why you are interested in this company and how you feel you can contribute to their mission.
Remember that the Career Services Office will do a Resume Critique, where we will review your resume for style and substance, as well as check for grammar and punctuation errors. You may email us at Ask4careeradvice@psu.edu, or drop off a hard copy at our office in the Susquehanna Building.
Whether it is a career counselor, faculty member or someone else, always have your resume checked by at least one other person, as it is too easy to miss errors on a document that you have put together and looked at so many times yourself!
