A notice from the Career Services Office-
Penn State students preparing to enter the job market should keep an eye out for scams as they reach out to potential employers. A recent series of scams, disguised as Web-based job postings, attempts to coerce victims into using their personal bank accounts to deposit fraudulent checks while wiring real money to scammers.
As students conduct job searches they should look for red flags, even after initial contact is established with a potential employer.
Job-seekers should be cautious:
— If duties described in a job posting differ from duties discussed later with the potential employer.
— If there is any discussion of using an applicant’s personal bank account to transfer money.
— If a potential employer’s website is poorly designed, or if pages deeper into a company’s website aren’t functional or are “under construction.”
— If email or Web address domains being used by a potential employer are not company-specific.
— If a job description or offer seems “too good to be true.”
Students at Penn State’s Penn State Harrisburg should bring concerns to our campus’ Career Services Office. Other students who have questions or concerns are encouraged to contact Career Services at 814-863-0225 or oci@sa.psu.edu.
