Employers Grade Candidate Attributes
Spotlight for Career Services Professionals – February 18, 2015
Employers graded average new graduate recruits on their skills and attributes and found that new grads have remained steady or lost ground in several key skills, according to results of NACE’s Job Outlook 2015 survey.
The grade for leadership among members of the Class of 2015 was a B+—the same as last year—but the grade still shows that new grads have room for improvement in this area. (See Figure 1.)
Teamwork dropped from an A- among 2013-14 respondents to a B this year, making it the second lowest graded attribute. Written communication skills, the third key skill employers look for, received a B-, down from a B+ last year.
New graduate recruits from the Class of 2015 gained in problem-solving ability and initiative, which received the highest grades from employers.
Data for the Job Outlook 2015 survey were collected from August 11, 2014, through October 7, 2014. A total of 260 surveys were returned—a 25 percent response rate. The Job Outlook 2015 report is available at www.naceweb.org/surveys/job-outlook.aspx or through the MyNACE area at www.naceweb.org/job-outlook/index.aspx.
