Students who are just starting out usually have no work experience in their major area or chosen work field. So, how do you show a prospective employer that you would make a good intern, or research assistant, or whatever?
Well, one thing you can do is show examples of how you have applied what you learned in class. You can showcase a major course or research project that simulates a real world situation. Including this on your resume shows that you can think a problem through, break down its parts, and create, deliver,or build a response.
You can set this as a separate section titled ‘Course Project(s)’, or put it under ‘Relevant Experience’. Include the name of the course and the semester or time frame. Use several bullet points to describe what you did and how you did it. Use present tense if you are currently working on it, past tense if it is completed.
Here are some examples of how you can present this on your resume:
Example 1. Barn Hoist, Engineering Methods Course Project, Spring 2015
- Designed, drafted, and problem solved a barn hoist
- Developed a cost of materials list
- Worked in a four person group and presented design to faculty and students
Example 2:
Business Applications, Fall 2012
- Oracle Database for a Starbucks Company
- Designed and implemented Starbucks human resources database using Oracle
- Created tables, queries, and reports to assist managers with staffing and scheduling issues
This idea isn’t only for technical majors. Look at the following examples:
Example 3:
Western European Economy: Then and Now, April 2015
- Completed a fifty-five page historical research paper including in-depth economic analysis of past and present financial concerns of Western Europe
- Conducted research on historical implications of changes in economic wealth in Western Europe
- Presented research in a twenty-slide PowerPoint to fifty students and ten staff in the economics department
Example 4:
Marketing for the Masses, Fall 2010
- Designed sample marketing survey to determine purchasing preferences and administered it to fellow students
- Analyzed resulting data and made recommendations on improving sales
- Gave oral presentation of completed project to faculty and students
