We know you want a break from studying, homework, test taking and project deadlines. However, spring break is a great time to try to secure a summer internship, if you haven’t already.
1. Make sure your resume is updated, complete and without error. Our office is open during spring break and we can review a resume that you email to us this week. Same for cover letters, or answering any question that may come up while you are looking.
2. Nittany Lion Career Network, our online job board, doesn’t go on spring break either. New positions will be posted as they come in ( as always), and deadlines for submission of materials may fall during break, since employers don’t pay attention to the PSU calendar! Don’t miss out by neglecting to check the board this week for new postings.
3. Work your network– the people you know, and the people who know the people you know. That’s right. Relatives and friends may know of leads in your desired field. Share your resume with them ( see #1), and ask them for referrals of people to contact and to keep you in mind if they become aware of an appropriate opportunity.
4. If you’re in your home area, (or even if you’re staying at school), why not try to make an appointment or two to meet with a favored local employer or business. They just might appreciate your initiative and be ready to discuss a summer or full-time position. Of course, do your homework first! That is, research the employer, check their website for open positions and learn as much as you can about them. But even if they don’t have a student section on their site, or list internships, you just might impress them with your knowledge and enthusiasm. That can go a long way to start an employer thinking, who may not have otherwise considered hiring an intern.
5. And, of course, as mentioned above, we’ll be here in the office. It’s easy to make an appointment during spring break, so give us a call, and set up something. We’ll be happy to work with you.
