The Creatures Seclusion from Humanity – Poster Session/Visual Art Work

R. Finazzo, Kutztown University

In Mary Shelley’s novel, “Frankenstein”, the creature must face the harsh rejection from not only society, but also from his own creator, Victor Frankenstein. Despite his gentle nature and innocence, the creature’s gruesome appearance makes him unapproachable by people. He is in an utter of confusion as to why humanity will not look past his exterior and just accept him as one of their own. in my relief print, l depict the creature during a moment of feeling lost and hopeless; abandonment from all of humanity. During the time of Romanticism, the sublimity in nature played a significant role in the works of literature and art. The theme of nature in Frankenstein shows through in my image because the creature spent much of his isolation in the woods. l present the creature in my composition while he is alone surrounded by leafless trees during the night time. l also pulled a quote from the novel of when the creature tries to make sense of his existence but cannot find answers to his questions. David and Goliath – How does Sam beat Bud in the Stock Market? – Paper Session

V. Jackson, Kutztown University

Anheuser-Busch (the maker of Bud) is 442 times the size of Boston Beer Company (the maker of Sam) in terms of assets and 78 times in terms of sales. Yet, during the last two years, Boston Beer Company‘s share price performance was 354% of that of Anheuser-Busch. The objective of my research is to find out why this is the case. l plan to analyze Boston Beer company’s short-term liquidity, long-term solvency, and profitability. My project will include extensive analysis of the company’s Balance Sheet, Income Statement and Statement of Cash Flows. In conducting this research project, I will use various financial statement analysis tools including trend analysis, ratio analysis, and prospective analysis. l will apply certain predictive models to the company’s financial statements to predict whether the company might go bankrupt or be taken over during the next three years. Ethanol-Induced Changes in Amino Acid Pools in a Ten-Day Chick Embryo – Paper Session

M.Wilson, L. Milakosksky, T. Avilla, & R.Bonk, Penn State Berks

The chick embryo provides a useful model to study the direct effects of ethanol on embryonic development without the confounding factors of maternal undernutrition or othoanol-induced placental dysfunction. The current study was designed to explore decreased availability of amino acids as a possible mechanism for ethanoi-induced growth suppression. Our working hypothesis is that ethanol causes a a redistribution of amino acids from the embryo too the allanloic fluid. The levels of forty-one different amino acids and related compounds were analyzed via ion exchange high-performance liquid chromatography in growth-suppressed ten-day chick embryos. Three compartments in the embryo were analyzed: allantoic fluid, amniotic fluid, and the whole brain. Significant differences in the levels of specific amino acids were identified in each pool but no consistent pattern of ethanol-induced alterations was identified. Ethanol exposure caused a significant increase in ammonia in the allantoic fuid byt no other amino acids were significantly affected. Of the thirty-six amino acids detected in the brain, thirty-two of them were decreased in the ethanol-exposed embryo but only a few tested significant. Ethanol caused almost no change in the amniotic levels of amino acids. Faculty Sponsor: l. A. Shibley
