How should I prepare my greenhouse before planting?
Several steps should be taken to maximize greenhouse benefits. Before planting in the greenhouse:
-
Clean greenhouse
-
Remove weeds and debris
-
Use greenhouse cleaner to remove algae and dirt (if applicable)
-
Wipe down inside glazing from top to bottom with soap and water
How deep should I plant my tomato seeds?
-
Plant your seeds, roughly twenty percent more than you want to grow.
-
In a nursery bed first, press your finger slightly into the soil (1/4 in) to plant your seeds.
-
Plants will germinate first in nursery bed and will then be transplanted into beds, once they are about the height of your hand (10-15 cm).
How far apart should I plant my tomato seeds?
-
After 18-21 days, select the healthy and strong plants with their roots and the soil
-
Into already made beds, plant about 30 cm apart from each other
-
Make sure the center of each of the plants is equal, giving room for harvesting
How should I water my crops?
There are two options available:
Drip Irrigation |
Manually |
|
Benefits |
•Less water is used•More efficient |
•No extra expenses•Less work for set-up and maintenance |
Costs |
•More expensive |
•Greater effort•More water needed |
If using drip-irrigation, the follow steps should be followed:
-
Lay your main line, and the punch holes where the water will be released, next to all your plants.
-
The drip-irrigation kit will include a vacuum breaker, hose connector and pressure regulator that should be connected to a hose regulator or directly to a faucet.
-
Install a timer to your hose connection to ensure the correct amount of water, to avoid “drenching and drying” that can occur when manually watering plants
-
It is preferred to keep irrigation system on for 30-60 minutes once every week, or experiment with what works best
How many times should I water my tomatoes?
-
Water thoroughly every 2-3 times week
-
Make sure your soil is maintaining a consistent moisture level
-
Since the roots can spread out, make sure to give about the length of your thumb (1 to 1 ½ in) of water.
